This runs from page 1 to 47 in my book which I borrowed from my local library.

I'm still a little iffy about this book. The library has a "scarey" sticker on the spine. I don't do scarey.I really love the cat, so far he's been the most enjoyable character. I think the eccentric old women in the flat downstairs are top notch too, though.
I find that you can tell the age demographic really easily when you're reading Coraline. The foreshadowing is really obvious and I feel like Gaiman simplified his writing style a lot and added way more words then I feel he might have used otherwise.
thoughts?
This is my first Gaiman book, so I had nothing but high expectations since I hear so many good things about his work. I'm taking Coraline with a grain of salt since this is obviously told for a younger audience.
But so far I'm really liking the cat too-- he's the most interesting character so far because he has some personality. I'm appalled at Coraline's parents' behaviour toward Coraline. They're so cold to her and I feel so bad. My mom dealt with me the same way sometimes when I was younger and my dad ignored my brother and I most of the time, so I personally connect with Coraline. I'm a little disappointed that Coraline hasn't had much character development though as she's the main character.
The two ladies, Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, are fun but I'm loving the cat.
For some reason I'm kind of relieved Gaiman didn't capitalize "other" for other mother, other father, etc. It's annoying when other books do it similarly because it just feels unnecessary half the time.
I'm wondering when Coraline will start preferring the other world over the real world. It's nice that she doesn't initially fall for the other world immediately, it makes it a bit more realistic to me (or as realistic as the story can be haha).
Any thoughts?

Oh also: I forgot this was set in the UK so when it was said it was a cold summer, I was confused since Kansan summers are unforgiving temperatures with a side of thick humidity haha! Always good to keep in mind the origin of the author when reading a book and the setting hasn't been exactly pinpointed...
