I found the climax of this novel rather disappointing. The scariest part, much to my own prediction, was in the last section either with the other-father or the Mr. Bobo in the attic.I found the bit with the hand taxing and boring. The defeat was anti-climatic. The only interesting thing to come out of it was the word from Mr. Bobo's mice.
All in all, a rather disappointing end too a mediocre book.
I expected Coraline to be scary the entire way, but instead it was just scary when Coraline met the other father in his thing form and when she challenged the other mother and threw the cat. The illustrations made these scenes a little scarier though.
I was fully prepared for the book to be finished after she comes home, but it was a little awkward to shove in the hand part. Not quite sure what this was supposed to accomplish, but I was glad to see that the never-ending well was used. I think it was good to have Mister Bobo's mice have some kind of say and Miss Spink and Miss Forcible's tea leaf reading, but the hand part threw me off a bit.
It was a pretty good, I bumped it up a star because the illustrations added to the story instead of minimizing.
And a note because I watched the movie-- I think the book is better (there are some differences like adding a character in the movie) so the movie got 3 stars while the book gets 4 stars (Goodreads ranking). Glad I finally got to read the book!
