I recommend Swamp by Michael Grunwald. The history and politics of the attempts to drain, exploit and restore the Everglades. Well worth reading.
And Swamplandia!, a novel by Karen Russell, who was a guest at Winter With the Writers this year. It's set in the Everglades - was a NY Times book of the year for 2011.
