I've been trying to figure out what book I read, that sounds very similar to the one you've described. Did you ever figure it out?
Melissa, the first comment is by "deleted user" ... have you checked over in the What's the Name of that Book group?
There seems to be no shortage of stories of time travelers with belts, so I'm not sure that this particular one was where: he encountered guys with swords who might've robbed/'killed' him, and his belt might've rotted and rivets corroded.
What I do remember, though, was that being separated from it caused his vision to shift through the electromagnetic spectrum. I think it got worse the further away from the belt he was, and I think he felt very disoriented and unwell.
Come to think of it, time might've passed very quickly in concert with this effect, which would make sense after a fashion.
