I was reading in this mornings paper about a unique use for a food truck. A woman named Joy Dismukes has been running a food truck that does not sell tacos or comfort food, but fresh produce in neighborhoods that are food deserts or have people who are unable to travel too far to shop for groceries. This is the final component to a project set up in the neighborhoods in 2011 that included a community garden, cafe, and cold storage for local gardeners.
The truck has been up and running for 2 weeks now, on 3 day loop and is going over well. They plan on adding organic produce soon.
Personally, I hope this works and that this idea spreads not only in Cleveland, but everywhere there are food deserts. This is a good use of a Federal grant and for once, I do not feel that money has been wasted. We need more of these kind of good ideas and good actions. Support your local farmers markets, community gardens and encourage your city to thing about a traveling produce truck.
