I can see about getting the first thread up in a bit, so you can post your thoughts while fresh and easier to remember which section.

That was the idea with the pace.
I'll likely read his other stuff, but probably not till late fall at the earliest.
Next month I'm starting the Gentleman Bastard stuff to be ready for book 3 in October.

Have Best Served Cold and The Heroes as Audible books. I've been listening to The Heroes on and off while I work through other audio books. Only a couple of chapters in, but it's as good as what I've read of the First Law series and Steven Pacey is an amazing narrator.

Last time I shot for 105. I think this time it might be closer to 110. Roughly 1/5 for each.
Depending on where he splits the books I might adjust it though. Last time it worked out almost perfectly by chance.

On the epub I'm reading, The chapter titled Small Crimes (Chapter 9) starts on page 110. Curious where your paper edition hits.
Page 116. My book doesn't have chapter numbers either, hence the titles instead.
Though maybe you just counted by hand?

"I will probably want to read the other books as well, but I won't have time for them this year, I think. I have a few Malazan books I want to read before the year is ended, and a lot of others books I've already planned for, too. :)
Best Served Cold was my absolute favourite!i think anyone who's enjoying these should make sure to the read the others too in the coming years! otherwise you won't meet Nicomo Costa, and he is the best character Abercrombie ever created!!
I own all the 3 books, but so far I've only read Best Served Cold and totally recommend it! I agree that Costa is the best character in the book. But I still think he is no match for Glokta - who is one of the best fantasy characters ever, imo :)
I will definately check out the other books at some point, but on the other hand there are so many other authors and world I'd like to discover. We talked about doing the Black Company books here next year.
Maybe afterwards or inbetween we could return to Abercrombie.
Have to finish The Republic of Thieves and The Ocean at the End of the Lane, then I'll be starting this one - probably by the end of the weekend. Looking forward to it.
Ok.. Not necessarily about the second book, but I'm curious about other's thoughts on why Glotka is so well liked by those that like the series. For me, for all of his faults, he's the most rounded character. I can kind of understand why he does the things he does. He doesn't have a high regard for himself and yet, occasionally, kindness shows through.

Feel free to start a separate thread on that. You're not obligated to only discuss the books in threads I make.
This thread is really meant for organization and preread chatter.

Nope. I set up rules and threads because that's how I like it, but things are meant to be more laid back.
My OCD might compel me to add a prefix to your thread and/or a book subject, but I won't be offended if people want more focused discussion.

I'm still waiting for my copy. I had hoped for it to arrive earlier this week, but looks like it's dragging. :(I hope it arrives tomorrow, so I can start it this weekend.

Cool. I'm really enjoying it so far. Better than the first one, and that was already pretty good.

That sucks. Hope you'll get it real soon to be able to enjoy it and join in on the discussion.
TOR is doing a reread of the first law trilogy. Here is the kickoff: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/08/rere...
Books mentioned in this topic
The Republic of Thieves (other topics)The Ocean at the End of the Lane (other topics)
Best Served Cold (other topics)
The Heroes (other topics)
The Blade Itself (other topics)

It looks like we have some decent interest for book 2, hopefully the discussion will be as successful. I know Igor has already started, though he didn't jump into the discussion much for book 1 as I recall.
As I mentioned in the other thread, I'll be dividing the book up (probably into 5 sections again since the length is about the same), and creating discussion threads in case anyone wants to get an early start.
Feel free to sound off if you're planning to join in etc.
Oh and same discussion rules from last time:
1) no spoilers (not even in tags) for future books/chapters in the section threads.
2) Spoilers for things from that part of the book are allowed/expected. No Need for spoiler tags. If you haven't finished the section enter the discussion thread AT YOUR OWN RISK!
3) Please be courteous to speculation. If someone says "I wonder if X will happen" don't answer them. It's fine to speculate with them (if you don't know yourself).
4) If you're posting in a thread for a part of the book/series you've read past, please try to keep that in mind when responding to others who may not have.
I'd just like to reiterate rule 4, I saw a bit of that last time. If you've previous read the book/whole trilogy it can be hard to remember what happens where. When in doubt, please don't post.
