Hi all,
I would love to get some recommendations from other members in the group

message 2: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) I would start by scrolling down to see what the group has read as monthly group reads. Those are usually really good books. Other than that, check out what people are currently reading. People will often write their opinions down as they read. Or there is a thread in here called "Favourites" and people have put their favourite books there. There are a lot of good ideas there.

great choices! the book thief is one of my alltime favorites, i swear that book changed the way i look at any book. another great book by Zusak is "I am the messenger". it's amazing but very different from the book thief, more witty and lighthearted while still having serious parts.

Of the series are they complete, because I have this thing where I have to read the complete series at once, just do a marathon of it if you know what I mean.

I have already read Harry Potter, Twilight, and the hunger games. Looking for more stand alone books. Also if anyone would like they can check out my profile to see what I have read, am currently reading, or plan on reading to get a better idea of who I am and what I like to read.

message 10: by Yesenia (new)

Yesenia Maqueda (annechase) | 140 comments I know the feeling. if i don't read them straightforward, i feel weird.

The first three are already finished, so you can go ahead and read them straight on. I'm no so sure about the last one, though.

Otessa | 7 comments Hi, everyone!

Bear with me for a little self promotion, but if you're looking for a new read, check out my Goodreads giveaway! It's for the first book in my YA series, "Orange Juice in Bishop's Garden."

It's a story about a bunch of rebellious teens growing up and getting down in my hometown, Washington, DC, during the '90s grunge era. I made a web series based on the story, which you can watch for free here: http://orangejuiceinbishopsgarden.com.

I hope you enter (and win!) or watch the series and enjoy! I've started branching outside of my series into short stories. I'd be happy to send any of them out to those who interested in writing an honest review :)

You can enter to win the giveaway here: http://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sho...

Thank you!! :)

Mschell (authormschell) | 6 comments Hi I have a new project called A LOVE SONG it started out as a poem, but after people read it and kept saying they wanted more I've continued to keep it going, no one knows how this thing will end. Here's how it all started--A LOVE SONG

(Yes, they know each other)

She wrote this man a love song, pouring out her heart
with trembling fingers and a million n one thoughts
she even used the "L word" which wasnt easy to do
for fear of a busted up heart, leaving it black and blue
she wrote about the future and possibly becoming his wife
scratched it out and changed it up and wrote about her life
she wrote about the good times and all the fun they had
she wrote about how the good times definately outweighted the bad
she wrote about being best friends, then she thought this can never be
they did kindergarten time together and now their both 23
she handed him the lovesong and was ready to runaway
he said, wait, where are you going, I need for you to stay
so she stood there frozen in time, one eye closed and a raised eyebrow
he read the words straight-faced, then smiled and just said WOW!

Alex Stefansson (paradisesquandered) | 22 comments Some of my all time favorite books are:

Been Down So Long it Looks Like Up to Me
God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater
The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye actually had a big impact on my life and inspired me to write this book: Paradise Squandered.

Please forgive me for promoting my own work, but I spent 5 years of my life writing, editing, and polishing it, and I'm really proud of what I have created.

Also, if you're looking for a good indie published YA book with a strong female protagonist, take a look at Left on the Edge. I actually edited this book recently, and I didn't really expect to enjoy it as I am a 29 year old male who doesn't generally read this type of book. But it was a good read with a good plot and believable characters.

Shirley | 6 comments Just finished First Night of Summer by Landon Parham
Fantastic psychological thriller that brought on emotions that I have never experienced from words on a page before. It is disturbing, graphic yet heart wrenching and enthralling all at once. Probably made my top three favorite books of all time. I don't really know how to describe it other than it just really moved me. He has already won awards for this debut novel.

Like his Facebook and show him our love. <3

Also, only 99 cents on kindle, nook, and ibooks right now! Give it a read.

Currently read First Night of Summer by Landon Parham
In a world where every second person is a self-proclaimed writer, myself included, it's easy to forget what makes a debut author stand out among all the other newly published books. It is because they have distinct talent and are good. Let me rephrase that, they are damn good and it sets them apart from the rest of the newbies. Landon Parham is a case in point. While this book may appear to be your run-of-the-mill thriller at first glance, it thoroughly disabuses you of that notion within just a few chapters. He moves the plot forward through a mixture of point-of-views, leaving you hanging on every last sentence waiting to see what will happen next. First Night of Summer is a sad, haunting tale about an ex military man, Isaac Snow and how he must find a way to protect what is left of his family before he loses everything to a dark and demented evil. Some violent parts can be difficult to read, but you will not be able to put it down. It is a fast-paced read with a strong plot driven story.
Check out the official book trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_FI2E...
Kindle, Nook, and ibook on sale for only 99 cents for a limited time.. I "liked" his Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Landon..., and he is one of my new favorites. I can't wait to read his next! #1 NYT bestseller, Sandra Brown picked his debut book, First Night of Summer as her recommended read this year!

I've read Atonement this year and really enjoyed it. I plan on rereading Narnia and Harry Potter. I liked a quote by C.S. Lewis that says "Some day you will be able to start reading fairy tales again"

message 29: by Gotobedmouse (last edited Oct 30, 2013 09:26PM) (new)

Gotobedmouse My favorite book I have read this year is "Mr. Penumbra's 24 hour bookstore" by Robin Sloan. It's based around San Francisco and the Google community. It has a Dan Brown mystery involved and debates "old technology" vs. "New technology". Really interesting and a quick read. I think it just hit paperback this month.

Martin A Game of thrones... I have just read the this one, but I have plans to read the whole collection, The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1) by Suzanne Collins The Hunger games, specially the first book. But if you like classics, I really recommend you The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo

I really liked The hunger Games, and The Count of Monte Cristo.
I love the t.v. show Game of Thrones (I have a crush on Kit Harrington aka Jon Snow:))

Teaselee | 1 comments I am here to describe a scenario and I want you all to please, please recommend me books that has the following:

The protagonist leads a double life, where s/he is a superhero/vigilante. It can even be the protagonist chasing after another superhero/vigilante who is actually his/her love interest (or friend or other love ones) in disguise. Anything really. Maybe the villain even disguising as a helpful figure too?

I don't care what genre it is. I know there are comics but I don't want those! Books please!

I've read and loved all your suggestions except The Game of Thrones. The size, oddly because the others aren't short, has intimidated me... Well worth it, I gather...

Thanks for the suggestions!
