Jess (jesmy777) Alright kids, it's that time again - August suggestions.

We haven't had any NON-FICTION in a while, so I'd love to see a few of those tossed into the mix.

Nina Sedlacek (ninasedlacek) | 19 comments For a non-fiction suggestion, I've been interested in reading Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking for quite awhile. I think it may have been suggested here a few times..

message 5: by Laura (new)

Laura | 54 comments I just added A Hundred Summers to my to-read list, so I second that!

For non-fiction, I've always wanted to read Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War. It's about how Confederacy still lingers in the South and the racism inherent in that. But it's supposed to be really funny too - re-enactors, and stuff like that.

Helena The Origin of Species

Interesting to read in the summertime when everything around us comes alive.

Yes to both. I have copies waiting for me.

I'd also like to suggest The Cuckoo's Calling given that it turns out Robert Galbraith is in fact JK Rowling so I think it would interest most of us.

Yes to this! Ever since I found out it was JK I've been interested in reading it. It seems a lot more accessible and interesting than The Casual Vacancy tbh.

Cricket (clutzycricket) | 12 comments The Burning of Bridget Cleary for nonfiction?

Agreed. I do want to read the Casual Vacancy someday, but Cuckoo's Calling looks a lot more fun. I find it hilarious how it was like #400,000 on Amazon's bestseller list, and then it skyrocketed to #1 in a day.

I secind this! I began to read it but had to drop it due to exams and I would love to go back to it.

Also, Your Voice in My Head by Emma Forrest

It's beautiful.

or, Just Kids by Patti Smith

or, because all of us are ONTDers and love gossip/hollywood,

Gods Like Us On Movie Stardom and Modern Fame by Ty Burr

No worries! I'm just hanging out in the woods waiting for the government to tell me if I'm too sick to go back to work and school (the short answer is YES!), so I have nothing else to do. :D

Good luck with classes! I'm jealous.

Holy crap, what a great book! I took a wonderful Irish history class (my major) and we read that and another book about her. Amazing how the myths and legends of the area were woven into this poor woman's horrible death.

message 14: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesmy777) Outlander Since they're making a TV show of it.

Jess (jesmy777) Amanda wrote: "On what channel?"

Starz. http://www.deadline.com/2013/07/outla...

This bloke is set to play Jamie. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1537825/

message 16: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesmy777) Should we do 2 books for August? If so, how would we like to divide it: contemporary fiction, classics, non-fiction, snark, etc. Let me know, I'm cool with whatever!

message 17: by Amy B (new)

Amy B (blackicebooks) | 51 comments I would like to put in My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglass. It's fantastic, he's so eloquent and his story is riveting.

message 18: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (cblace) | 35 comments I'm honestly down to have as many book club books a month as possible. Nothing overwhelming ofc, but you guys make great suggestions and I like having that deadline that I can never seem to give myself in my casual reading.

I like the deadlines too! Although, half of my Nightstand collection on my Kindle are ONTD books I'm behind on, but I've been doing way better lately.

I just started that one! I like it so far; I second this suggestion. :)
