What the frell!? You're right (not the Nutella™) about lying on my left side. When I tried sleeping if I rolled onto my left side they would stop. I'll keep that in mind if/when they start up again today. I've been drinking so much water (I usually use the plug your nose and drink water method) that I have to use the bathroom every 15 minutes. Of course I can't really lay down on the left side while I'm on campus, but this just might help. Brilliant. Seriously brilliant! Thanks. XOXOXOXOXOX

It Worked! :)

I only had two bouts of hiccups yesterday (not counting those that happened on campus) and both times lying on my left side dispelled them. I couldn't very well get up and lay down on the floor on my left side while on campus, but I certainly considered it.

Thanks Roger! I owe you a big one!

See, who said complaining never did any good. :) XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

I cannot be of much help because the only TV I watch is BBC Breakfast, BBC One o'clock News and Aussie soap Neighbours on Channel 5. I didn't even see Doctor Who's Got Talent, though the audience yell from the studio could be heard all over the country.

I watched it a day later since I have no internet or broacast tv at home. A friend said that BBCAmerica crashed during it so she couldn't watch it "live" either.

And what do we have in the States?

Yawn Batman? Who cares? He's almost as big a corporate stooge as Iron Man. Almost. Now if they were to recast Indiana Jones ...

Still I'm hoping for Neil Patrick Harris as Marvel's Doctor Strange, but I'd take Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Or Hugh Laurie or Viggo Mortensen...

Preston | 20148 comments Tues Aug 6 FROM TG DAILY at: http://www.tgdaily.com/games-and-ente...

We just reported on the upcoming 50th anniversary Doctor Who special that will be broadcast simultaneously world-wide in 3D. Now there is officially a new Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi, an actor who hails from Scotland.

As USA Today reports, Capaldi is very excited to take on the role, and upon the announcement of the big news, he said, “It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer.” It turns out Capaldi is a big fan of the good Doctor, and he added, “I haven’t played Doctor Who since I was 9 on the playground.”

Roger Kean | 17278 comments I sincerely wish Stephen Fry's open letter will have an effect, though I'm more inclined to opt for the "go there in rainbows and stand up for what's right" school of thought than an outright boycott. He does, however, say the IOC has time to rearrange the venue…

I've no doubt many have seen Stephen Fry's letter, but in case not, find his stirring words here:

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2013/08/07/...

message 33: by Preston, Moderator (new)

Preston | 20148 comments It is dreadful that I must say this but the Olympics cannot be cancelled or it would start a backlash against gays for ruining the games. Also I regret that it is impossible to move to another venue within six months because it is logistically and monetarily impossible.

I also am sad that of all the famous and powerful advocates we could have writing to the OIC, the best we can do, with all respect to his talent, is Stephan Frey who is unknown to 99.9 percent of the people in the world.

Where are the letters from the leaders of even the countries where civil unions are permitted? That would be Andorra, Australia, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Where are the letters from the leaders from of the countries where gay marriage is legal including Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and Uruguay plus where laws are passed but pending like the UK?

Were is the letter from President Obama?

As much as I respect Stephen Frey, and better he write to the IOC than nobody, we need letters from people who can actually change matters. None of them wants to put up a stink because it might not be politically in their interests.

And why is it only Russia where we are calling for human rights to be respected for Gays and other sexual minorities? Is it only important when the Olympics are involved?

Too many countries including the United States of America do not legally consider gays to have any human rights so they do not see that Russia has become only one of the many countries which are guilty of this injustice. That is why Putin will get away with this.

The most import aspect of the Stephen Frey letter to the IOC is that it points out who has not written letters saying this.

message 34: by Roger (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments At least President Obama's "patience" with Russia is running thin. Perhaps we should be grateful for that.

"I have no patience for countries that try to treat gays and lesbians and transgender persons in ways that intimidate them or are harmful to them."

Perhaps, Preston, he lives in a different America to the one you inhabit?

Today the BBC ran an article on the lunchtime news about the fact that Russia is already breaking four of the seven primary charter commandments of the IOC, but drifted off onto British chances at the games. I guess the BBC's patience is running as thin as President Obama's.

message 35: by Monika (new)

Monika | 2175 comments One small comment Preston and I get that a letter from leaders would be a good thing but so is speaking out like our Prime Minister. When this first came to light he was the first to speak out against Russia and the last I heard President Obama has cancelled talks with Russia, small things sure but the two of them aren't silent and that's a good thing. I agree with you on how it would be impossible to change the venue now, my son and I were just talking about that yesterday, and I agree that if the games are boycotted there could end up being a backlash against Gays but this thing with Russia really isn't new it's just coming out now because of the games. It's unfair to ask if this is only happening because the Olympics are involved anything that brings attention to Human Rights is a good thing and the only thing that's different here is that the news has been reporting it so blame them for not doing that all the time, and in my opinion anything that brings situations like this one to the public is a good thing it can only help people to see the injustice of it all.

Okay not such a small comment....I wish Monika could learn to make short comments when she says she's going to. :-P

message 36: by Rick (new)

Rick | 15796 comments Preston you do bring up some good points, not the least of which is that it would be nice if someone like the US President stood up and made such a protest. But I disagree that someone writing a letter other than a political leader is useless. While a single voice in a crowd may get drowned out that single voice can become a point around which a roar is raised. I am very glad that someone like, say for instance, Rosa Parks decided to a small single-voiced act of rebellion. And she was less well known that Stephen Fry. I also think it might be more affective to recognize, as Monika points out, that the issue about the Olympics is only shedding light on a problem that has been growing for far longer than the Olympics. It wasn't really just the position on a bus that Rosa Parks had a problem with after all, but she choose that aspect to take her seat ("make her stand" seemed inappropriate).
What I'm happy about is that we can discuss the issue and voice our opinions where as in some parts of the world, like Russia, there are those who cannot.

Monika | 2175 comments Well said Rick! I agree with you completely. Where would we be today if people like Rosa Parks didn't speak out.

I wish I had thought of that.....I'm only doing the "I wish" part so I don't get my knuckles wrapped(?) I think that might be wrong, sheesh I think I'm losing my mind or I've already lost it. *shakes head*

I wish(ed), when I was young and didn't know better that I went to a Catholic School (all girls). What was I thinking no boys??? :O

message 41: by Rick (new)

Rick | 15796 comments Yeah, had I gone to an All Boys Catholic School I would have been like Stephan Geoffries character, Williams, from Heaven Help Us. Only it wouldn't have been Catholic Girls I would have been dreaming about.

And speaking of Geoffries ... I wish he had gotten more recognition as an actor so he hadn't had to turn to porn later in his career. He and Roddy McDowall were the best things in the original Fright Night. Although Chris Sarandon certainly hammed it up as well.

message 42: by Monika (new)

Monika | 2175 comments Hmmm...and what would you be dreaming about I wonder? *LOL*

I had such a big crush on Chris Sarandon sigh photo daydreaming.gif I need to pull out those movies it's been years since I've watched them I hardly remember them.

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments Would going to an all boys/girls school be better or worse than a co-ed one I wonder. Would not having to worry about guys have made life a little easier? Probably not. Sigh. :o\

message 44: by Rick (new)

Rick | 15796 comments I would have had to worry about guys either way. But at least at an All-Boys school I wouldn't have had to worry about having a pretense of that kind of interest in girls. This would have been back in those dark dreary days of the psychodelic 70s, back when it was OK to like KISS and Alice Cooper but not Rocky Horror Picture Show.

message 45: by Preston, Moderator (last edited Aug 09, 2013 02:19PM) (new)

Preston | 20148 comments Rick wrote: "But I disagree that someone writing a leader is useless...."

Hi Rick,

I wrote regarding Fry, "...and better he write to the IOC than nobody…" so I do agree with you and anyone, everyone, you, me should be flooding the IOC and their country's leader with letters on this.

You wrote, "it might be more affective to recognize, as Monika points out, that the issue about the Olympics is only shedding light on a problem that has been growing for far longer than the Olympics."

The nazi-like laws of locking up all gay people are new laws nevertheless to clarify that I know the repression has gone on for a long time I wrote "Too many countries including the United States of America do not legally consider gays to have any human rights so they do not see that Russia has become only one of the many countries which are guilty of this injustice. That is why Putin will get away with this." Why stop at protesting Russia's actions when they are many countries where oppression and discrimination against gays is longstanding. It is duplicitous and hypocritical of President Obama to fail to recognize publicly that the US is guilty of discrimination against gays and all sexual minorities.

In the US it is still legal to fire an employee for no other reason except sexual orientation, people can thrown out of their apartments and even be refused service at any public accommodation for being gay unless local law prohibits this.

So Americans should be writing to the hypocrite Obama telling him to speak out against these atrocious injustices in the US as well as all countries where sexual minorities do not have the same rights as any other citizen.

Thanks for your adding your voice in protest to what has become a focus because of the Winter Olympics.
