Tell us a little bit about your favorite books and what makes them so entertaining

Herm (darklongbox) (darklongbox) Grendel by John Gaarder. Tells the familiar story of Beowulf, but from the monster's perspective. Sad and disturbing, but ultimately a tale about an inescapable destiny. This and any of Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels. Contains myths in abundance

Sounds interesting.. I've never heard of it before

Herm (darklongbox) (darklongbox) Oh, and my absolute favorite book of Norse Mythology: The Norse Myths by Kevin Crossley Holland.

I'll have to add a new category

I love love love the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. I can't get enough of it and love how she works some Native American mythology into it, especially in the later books

Herm (darklongbox) (darklongbox) I've never read Patricia Briggs, but I am interested in Native American Mythology, since I don't know much about it. I might give these novels a try.

You won't be disapointed. The Mercy Thompson series are some of my favorite books of all times. Some people think the first book is kind of slow, I didn't, but don't let that discourage you. It's well worth it =)

Brianna | 3 comments I need to reread Moon Called so I can read the rest of the Mercy Thompson series.

Lauren (laurenjberman) I'm also reading the Mercy Thompson series and enjoying it. Nevertheless, my favorite is the Kate Daniels series. Each book focuses on a different mythology.

I'm impressed and a little tired from looking at your list. I've read about half of these and they are hard and long.

I loved the Iliad and the Odessey, but I have really enjoyed reading the retakes on the Greek goddesses or characters from the myths, like the Gorgons.

Read the comic "Age of Bronze". There are 3 Volumes out now in trade paperback form. It retells the Trojan War brilliantly & in a way that is easy to follow & get involved in but still deeply rewarding.

Have you read Bullfinch's Mythology, Robert Graves's "The Greek Myths" or Michael Grant's "Myths of the Greeks & Romans"? I also recommend the Ted Hughes translation of "Metamorphosis".

message 15: by Mindy (new)

Mindy (dreamer2229) | 6 comments I have a book on the Greek Myths, but I'm not sure of the author. My kids are into the Myths so I'd have to find it and look at the author. I haven't had time to read much on myths lately. When I'm up for some heavy reading I'll look up Ted Hughes translation, but I think that might be a little too much right now... especially since I"m having trouble seeing straight much less thinking straight right now :-)
