I hate dog earring as well! I also hate when people crack the spine. Just any mistreatment at all to books really peeves me. My books are like my children lol!

I've lost some of my favorite books to people who don't return them or misplace them. Makes me so upset and sad lol...For some reason, if I own part of a series in paperback, I want all of it in paperback. I'm finally getting to The Hunger Games (I know, I'm late!) and am super sad that I can't get Mockingjay in paperback, too. But the books are so good I HAVE to buy the hardcover because I can't wait to read it!
Olivia wrote: "...Also, anytime someone asks me to borrow a book, I inwardly cringe and the entire time they have it I am worrying about whether or not it will be in perfect shape when I get it back."Hahahaha story of my life!
People talk to me when I read (even with more than the 2 of us around) like a full-on conversation (it's not like I pull out a book to be rude, just during quiet moments)
I hate dog earring and sometimes I hate library books because they smell and they have questionable stains on them. AHHH
pet peeve: not being able to find a book where it's shown in card catalog /: also highlighting or writing in library books
Dog earring, drawing and writing on books I cannot stand. But I absolutely can't stand spine cracking. The noise brings it to the top of the list. Lol.
Pet Peeves:1: When covers don't match!!! I hate that soooo much!!! I want all my books to look pretty and match each other :)
2: Writing or highlighting books
3: Cracking of the spine of the book
4: Ripped pages
5: Dog earring
Those are my biggest pet peeves when it comes to books!
I don't have many pet peeves when it comes to lending my books, only that I actually get them back or get them back in a timely manner. A friend borrowed a series from me and lent the first three books to her friend. It was eight months before I got them back and that's just disrespectful. Oh, and she only read one in the eight months! Grrr. As far as dog earring and cracking the spine, I'm okay with that if I've read the book already. My biggest pet peeve is with book consistency.
I can't stand when the book is released in a new size. Yes, I could wait another year and choose the size, but the new releases should be consistent.
Also, if the cover model is the main character and they change the cover model, that infuriates me. It's like watching a TV show and they change the actor and don't tell you.
Also, the series style, font, etc should be the same on every book. It's all about consistency for me. I like to be able to tell its part of the same series by the appearance of the book. It doesn't have to be the same colour or have the same image, but don't mess with my font type or general style.
^ I agree, I hate when they change the consistency of a book! It bothers me a lot. However, I think I get the most peeved when a book that is AMAZING is not read by as many people as it should be (i.e.: Firelight Series). It disappoints me when the crappy books get all the attention... :(
I remember I was reading the end of Requiem and I got a phone call in the middle!!!!!!!!! I flipped out at my friend the next day!!! ;)
A huge pet peeve for me is when it's dark and I'm reading with a book light but it doesn't shine all the way down to the bottom of the page!! Also, I find it annoying when a hard cover book as that flap that covers it but isn't attached and it always falls off the book.
When people ask me what language I speak, the conversation usually goes something like this...Them: "Do you speak Indian?"
Me: "You can't speak a nationality."
Them: "Do you speak Hindu?"
Me: "You can't speak a language. It's pronounced Hindi."
Them: "Okay, then, do you speak Hindi?"
Me: "No."
Them: "I thought everyone from India spoke Hindi."
Me: *Trying not to strangle them*
It's so annoying!
Are Pet Peeves named after Peeves from Harry Potter, or is it the other way around? Does anyone know?
I hate when people ask to borrow my books and their dog eats it. That makes me cry.I also hate when people lick their thumbs before turning the page that is so gross.
I can't stand it when people try to talk to me while I'm reading. My co-workers do it to me all the time while I'm reading on my lunch break and it gets on my nerves so badly.
I also don't like it when people damage the books that I loan out to them. I loaned out a copy of a manga that I had to a friend of mine in middle school. When she returned it, a corner of the cover was missing! I was so mad lol >_<

I don't loan books out to anybody who I don't live with. I've gotten a few books back completely ruined and I have lost some entirely (including some friends)I hate folding, writing or highlighting. I hate finding disgusting things in library books.
I hate that I have one series with +/- 14 books and I have 10 small pocketbooks and then all of a sudden they changed it to huge hardcover books. They don't match at all anymore.
I can't stop reading in the middle of a chapter.
I hate it when a hardcover has that loose paper cover around it. It's so annoying, but when you remove it you're left without a colorful cover. I can't imagine someone actually prefering that.
When covers in a series don't match!! I can't stand it they need to all look in their place and have the same theme for there covers. Also I Cannot stand it when books in a series or triply are different size! I've only seen this once in my collection but in my copy of the tiller man cycle books by voigt (can't remember first name,I think it's Cynthia but not positive) Whig I've had for a long time, One book is tall and has a illustrated cover an the other one is short with a photo as a cover. IT IS NOT OKAY
pet peeve would be when i have my whole room in order well i know where everything is at least and my mom cleans or moves stuff around im like what the...but why everything was so good..now i gotta get comfortable to this..
I'd probably have to say the consistency of book heights in a series. When buying a book online, I always check the dimensions to assure that it's in the right size as the other books in the series.
my pet peeve comes down to the font of a book. i can't stand it when they typeset books in sans-serif or other "odd" fonts. like the lunar chronicles or day's chapters in the legend trilogy. with writing in books, i don't personally do it but i'm fine with it (i like when other people write in library books actually). i only dog-ear if it's an emergency. i like beat up books though, it shows they're loved c:
I hate when I get a book from the library and its paperback and its all folded up and the cover is messed up. That's why I just get newer books from the library, like put them on hold before the library has them so I get them first
I hate when people chew loudly. I'm like trying to read or concentrate on something but all I can hear is chewing. It's not even the crunching that really gets me, it's like the sound of the saliva mixed with it.
I hate it when I'm at some boring, family gathering, and someone comes up to me and tells me that I need to close my book and socialize, than they physically grab my book and close it. [And me not wanting to be rude, does.] But the entire time I'm thinking "I barely know you, what makes you think you can take my book away." Also once you put your book away know one talk's to you anyway. I can't stand it. Believe it or not but this has happened more than once. But don't worry I always find some hiding spot and read there where no one find's me... ;]
My father is kinda like that. He's an extrovert and I'm an introvert. I've tried explaining it to him but it hasn't helped. He thinks there's something wrong with me because I don't like to socialize, Which is ironic because his youngest brother is the same way I am but Dad doesn't ever complain about him.
I don't think I have too many pet peeves, but one of them is dog earring in new books from the library as well as creasing of the cover on new books. I'm like it's been there for like a couple of weeks only and it looks like this now? Older books I don't care because they're...well, old. And also in books, lots of times, the girl always says she can see (whatever it is) in the guy's eyes and all this crap when really if you look solely into someone's eyes you just see some colour and reflection; it's actually more about the expression on the person's face which is not just made up of the eyes.
Olivia wrote: "I was just curious as to if you guys have any pet peeves that relate to reading or books in general? For one, I am completely against dog-earing book pages. Grr, that irritates me to no ends.
Also..."
Hmm. When I read I tend to make notes and markup my books if the book is really good. BUT, dog eating a book. No way! I think that should be illegal.
It annoys me when the covers in a series don't match and look out of place together. If it's a series, I feel like the books need to have a matching theme.I hate when people write or highlight in books.
Someone mentioned it in this conversation, and I couldn't agree more; it really irks me when books have weird fonts. A great example is Day's perspective in Legend.
Anyone else have these pet peeves?
I hate it when people dog-ear my pages. Breaking the spine on my books is frowned upon also. I don't mind if it's cracked, but breaking it to the point where it falls open to that spot is sad. I also rrreeeaaallyyyy dislike it when a book comes back permeated with the smell of cigarettes. I work at a library, and unfortunately this is a common problem. :/
I hate it when people tell me to not dog ear my pages. I only dog ear the pages when it's a book I own, but everybody acts like it's a crime, gosh. To those people: *folds page over until it almost rips out of the spine and then creases it with finger BOTH WAYS while smiling evilly.* When I lone a book of mine to people, I tell them it's okay if they dog ear the pages and then they bring the book back and they normally don't, but it makes me happy when the paperback cover is messed up a little bit from being in a backpack. Makes the book feel more loved and unique to me, with more stories attached to it than the one that is written in it.

Weird fonts. I definitely agree. I think it draws too much attention to itself.
I hate when people judge books by the movies based on them or use the movie as an excuse not to read the book. It's not the same thing!
When people try talking to me when I'm reading and I hate having to pause in the middle of a chapter. Either I finish the chapter or don't bother going to the next until I'm ready to
Nadia wrote: "When people try talking to me when I'm reading and I hate having to pause in the middle of a chapter. Either I finish the chapter or don't bother going to the next until I'm ready to"I HATE that. I've gotten to the point that my family has to throw something at me to get my attention. I get so deep into my book that everything else disappears.
Stephanie lmao, I've had things chucked at me too. But it sucks because once you get distracted, it's hard getting back in that same vibe once again.
@Nadia IKR! It drives me crazy and I swear it is the only time my mother ever wants to talk to me is when I am doing something. No matter if I am just reading or writing. Once I get thrown out of my groove it takes forever to recover. Like now lol
I absolutely hate when the covers don't match in a series. An example is Throne of Glass. The 1st cover doesn't match the rest of the books in the series and it drives me insane! Also, I hate it when people break the spines.
It irritates me when I know people are borrowing books and not returning them. A friend of mine borrowed The Shining from the school library, didn't bother to read it, and never returned it (himself anyway). I returned it. I loaned out several of my favorite books to someone about a year and a half ago. I still haven't gotten any of them back. Another one of my pet peeves is my mom criticizing me for spending all my time reading instead of having a social life. Haha. The irony...
1. I hate to dog ear the books. I had ever done it to some books because I didn't have anythings with me to mark the pages and I really really hate it. At home, I ironed it and tried hard to smooth them back :(( 2. I hate to break spine. I adore the books spine. They make my shelves look pretty! And if there's a long ridiculous line on the spine - well, I hate it SO MUCH!
3. I don't really like to lend my books to someone that I don't really know. I become timid and feel there's something missing.
4. I hate to see different height and mismatch cover of books and actually it happens a lot in a series. I don't know why the publishers change them in the second or third book. They ruin the books!
5. I hate it when I'm reading a book and suddenly I remember something important to do for ex: finish my essay or report. It really ruins my mood and whenever it happens, I feel difficult to get into the book :(
Ok lets start.I hate when the main character is a "Perfect" person and hero.
I hate when I really like this series and I have been reading it forever then once you finish the last book you feel empty
I hate when the author makes the numbering for his book super confusing
And...I CAN'T STAND WHEN AUTHORS KILL MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER AND THE HERO COULD HAVE SAVED THAT PERSON(I'm talking to you Dashner!)
A friend-of-a-friend has this super annoying habit of physically harming her books depending on her opinion. In one case, City of Heavenly Fire, whole chapters were dogeared. Not just on the corner. THE WHOLE PAGE. FOR CHAPTERS. And you could tell exactly where all the most steamy romantic parts, and the… umm… sex scene… was based on the dogears. This FOAF also harms her books if she doesn't like the endings. She was reading the last book of the Selection series or something and hated the ending so much she TORE OUT THE PAGES! A friend of mine was so heartbroken she did the nice thing and spent an hour or so taping the last scene back together.
I personally get really annoyed when I'm reading a new book and EVERYONE wants to read the blurb. I understand that it may look interesting, but I'm in the middle of reading! Could it possibly wait until I'm done? Generally, I just don't like it when people interrupt my reading. Also, I really dislike spoilers, but I guess most readers get annoyed about that :/

I hate it when the characters that get killed get killed for no reason!
Dog earring, drawing in a book (unless you are supposed to), creasing the spine/rolling the front cover and pages over as you finish reading them, setting the book open upside-down, etc. I have a sorta friend who does all of these things. I let her borrow a book once and I haven't gotten it back yet. Hopefully when I do get it back, she didn't do any of these things to my book…
