Recently, I watched this video titled "Book Scoffers" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxJbeT...

And I thought "Wouldn't it be great to discuss this? Because I'm pretty sure the majority of bookworms and booklovers experience this?"

I think that you will never escape that moment in life when you're reading a book and someone who is not interested at all in the book you are reading just happens to ask "What are you reading?"

I just ... I don't understand. If you want to talk to me, then don't talk about things you yourself do not care about. Especially when they don't read books. Why are you asking me about the book I am reading if you are just going to ridicule me for liking books? :/. A conversation is when two people converse with each other. The conversing isn't going to go anywhere if you aren't interested in it.

Wow ... rambling, bad habit. But I really want to know about people's opinions on these situations and if it has ever happened to you and how you feel about it?

L | 1252 comments Yes. I have experienced this many times. I love to read (of course!) and yet my family are not quite so obsessed as i am about spending so many hours a day with thier head in a book.

On many ocasions my mother has spotted me deep in thought, reading in a corner, and has asked what am i reading? or is it good?

1). would i be so mesmirized by a book that i am reading and yet not like it?!
2). Why ask me what i am reading when (a) she has no idea who on earth the authors are of the kind of books that i read and (b) she isn't interested anyway?

Perhaps i am a little touchy or just a bookworm to the extreme, but questions like the above do tend to anoy me unless asked by someone genuinely interested.

Me: *reading peacefully on my laptop at school*
Friend: Hey, what are you doing?
Me: *looks up slowly from screen* Uhh, I'm reading.
Friend: You're reading? Why?
Me: Because it's interesting?

Friend: What's it about?
Me: *Thinks 'Oh dear, here we go'* It's about um... Like vampires.
Friend: *looks at me weirdly* What like, Twilight?
Me: NO! Not like Twilight. This isn't about sparkle-in-the-sun, lovey-dovey fairies - this is about hardcore, drink-blood-and-kick-ass vampires.
Friend: *raises eyebrow and nods slowly* uh huuuh.
Me: Well what happens is there's two types of vampires - the vampires and the vampaneze. The Vampaneze are the bad guys and the series is basically about a war between the two species. And humans join in after a while but yeah it's really hardcore and amazing.

Friend: Uhhm o-kay? How long's the series?
Me: 12 books. About 300-400 pages each.
Friend: WHAT?! 12 ENORMOUS BOOKS?
Me: Yep.
Friend: Are you legit?!
Me: Yep.
Friend: ...
Me: ...

Friend: What are you doing with your life?
Me: ...
Friend:...

Me: *runs away crying* I'M NOT YOUR FRIEND ANYMORE!

That's right! It was sooo hard to explain and I was just left saying "It's really good, okay! It's hard to explain but please believe me it's really amazing!". Shortly afterwards my friend slowly backed away from me....

Bless! That reminded me so much of innumerable encounters with my friends when i was at school, and how they just didn't always 'get it'! :)

I don't and will never understand people who don't like books, but as long as they keep their ignorant freakishly normal selves away from me, I'm fine.

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 22 comments I pity them, they're missing so many great experiences. This happened to me once:
Guy at school: what are you doing?
Me: Reading.
Guy at school: Really? Can I see the book?
Me: Sure. *gives book*
Guy at school: *thumbs through the book* No pictures? How boring.
Me: ...

^ how irritating! i get very annoyed at those people.

It's fine to not enjoy reading but it's another thing to ridicule another's love for reading.

Jazzy (stairstepjitters) | 62 comments What I don't like about book-scoffers is that they're always so pushy about their opinion. It always goes down something like this...
Book scoffer: I don't like reading.
Me: Okay.
Book scoffer: I literally hate it.
Me: Improper use of literally but okay.
Book scoffer: No, I like HATE books.
Me: Okay.
Book scoffer: This is not going down the way I thought it would.
Me: Okay.

Jazzy (stairstepjitters) | 62 comments Locate some decent chill, get a chill pill from your local pharmacy, and get out of my library if you can't handle the heat. It's a fairly simple decision.

I pity book-scoffers. :( How can you dislike reading?! You can pretty much go anywhere for free, and books don't need recharging! These people have no idea what they are missing. Anyone who says they don't like reading must have not discovered their type of book yet.
