Are you just starting to learn French? Want to learn? Have been speaking French for a while?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I want to learn French!!!

message 3: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) I started learning in august!

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

YEAH! I KNOW!

message 5: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) I know you know! :D And I also know that you started learning spanish before I started learning french!

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

:D

message 7: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Anybody else interested in learning French?

message 8: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) today, I watched yu-gi-oh in french. after that I kept wanting to write french instead of pig latin. And I didn't even have to stop and think about how to say what I wanted to say. Or type, rather. IT HAS INFILTRATED MY BRAIN! But then again... if I had french first thing in the morning, I could just watch yu-gi-oh before going to school, and then my brain would be in gear. Too bad I have it last...

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I hate that! I hate it when I feel like I am almost fluent when I am about to speak it, but I am in Chem or Lit!

message 10: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) lol. Yeah... And sometimes when I get out of french class, I almost say stuff in french on accident... I have to keep reminding myself that other people won't understand me if I speak french.

And of course, i can't really do a french accent in english, and if I try, I end up speaking in french. It's like the shape of my mouth is linked to language or something... Just like if feels wrong if I speak french with a 100% american sounding accent. I've heard american accents before (like, the really strong ones) and they sound weird. I think that it might be fun to try to speak french with a british accent though...

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

That would be hilarious!

message 12: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) LOL. i tried it and it was fun. :) I don't think that I could easily do a mild british accent though. Only a strong one. but that's okay.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Ask Paige.

message 14: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) no, a british accent while speaking french! I've tried it! IT was fun! :D

message 15: by Kacey Rai (new)

Kacey Rai | 9 comments Argh, i keep on getting it mixed up with Afrikaans! (sort of like dutch) everytime i want to say something in french i think it in afrikaans, then everytime i want to say something in afrikaans, i think it in french. it gets really anoying sometimes

message 16: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) haha, I can imagine. I think that it would be really cool to learn afrikaans. :)

message 17: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) Wow, Afrikaans. I've never actually seen or heard it before, I just know it exists.
I hate how I can dream and think in fluent french and just can't speak it half as well!

same here!! (when school started) i'm in french 1 at school

message 19: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) well, that would be two Augusts ago now. Because I posted that before August '09, and now it's after that. So I have been learning french for a year and a half. I really hope that I can start learning Spanish as well next school year!

message 20: by Madeline (new)

Madeline haha i would like to able to just keep up with you lol i can get the base of what you guys are saying but... i dont really know that much

message 21: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/6...

(a pretty cool group. Not too active, but it's all about French!)

Well, as you learn more, you'll be able to understand more. A year ago for me, it was tough to understand stuff that was written by others online. It has become tremendously easier now that I've learned all of the major tenses and moods. I also had lots of practice reading, because we spent about a month reading a simplified version of Cyrano de Bergerac, and then watching the movie.

message 22: by Madeline (new)

Madeline wow cool. thanks :)
i cant wait to learn more. i'm having so much fun with it.

message 23: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) I just wrote an acrostic poem about Mardi Gras in French!
I also had to write a one page news article in French for class, with the hooks and topic sentences and everything else.
I feel accomplished :D

message 24: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) That is something to feel accomplished about! It would take me a very long time to write a one page news article...

message 25: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) We've been deviating from the usual textbook-worksheet-test regime for the past week, and we've been reading a children's novel called Le Petit Nicolas. It's so much more interesting to find subjonctif or vocabulary in a book than in a textbook!
I think we're going to watch a movie in French and analyze that as well. That should be fun...

Rohini | 1 comments Elaine wrote: "Are you just starting to learn French? Want to learn? Have been speaking French for a while?"

Yes i would like and i really want to learn french and many other languages.I am just a beginner
I even want to have my hold on English.
Please do reffer me some books if i want to improve my vocabulary.

message 27: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) French oral exam today! It was our final, and our teacher dropped questions on us like, "Qu'est-ce que vous ferez apres le universite?" and "Si tu peux etre n'importe qui, qui serais tu et pourquoi?"
Hard enough to answer en anglais, let alone in french!

message 28: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Hmm... I probably would have said something like, "Je lirai et écrirai. Et... je ne sais pas"

message 29: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) I said, "J'acheterai une grande maison avec...(insert long list of cool things)," but Mme proceeded to clarify, "carrière." I was stumped!
I got an application for le Societe Honoraire Francais, but some of the questions are beyond me. The first one states a french proverb and asks how it inspires me. I could tell them in English, but in French...I would tailor my answer so that it was something I could say rather than what I actually feel. It's so limiting!

message 30: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Understandable. I feel that way sometimes. It's kind of like, "I want to say... wait, I have no clue how to say that. Crap. Ummm... I'll just say something else" And my school has a Spanish honors society, but not a French honors society, and I don't know why. :(

Ugh, I have to write a job application in French. And on Friday (I think) we have to interview each other.

message 31: by 3aish (new)

3aish | 2 comments Wow!! I've been taking french ever since I started school, but I never gave it much thought because we used to speak english in the class. My french was very weak back then. This year we had a new french teacher and she is amazing, only french!!! So I'm better now. hehe.. But I want to become fluent..

message 32: by 3aish (new)

3aish | 2 comments But the stuff we are taking aren't helping me.I mean last week we watched Oui Oui.. Ugh!! I couldn't help but grumble and groan, for heaven's sake, we aren't kids!!!! We're high school students!!!!! (I feel better now..)

message 33: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) All of our French teachers are native French people, complete with fiery French tempers :)
Starting with French 3 (which is what I'm in), we can only speak in French. If we get caught talking in English, we lose participation points. It was really hard to get used to at first, but I really think it helps make us more fluent.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I'd love to learn French someday!

message 35: by Kacey Rai (new)

Kacey Rai | 9 comments i think my french would improve drastically if we only were alloud to speak in french in the class. as part of a french tour i attended a french school for a week, and found it very challeneging because everything was in french and we were taught in french as well as the fact that i was placed in a more advanced class than i had come from. i swear the taecher thought i was alittle bit slow because she would ask me a question and i had no idea what she was saying so would just stare at her =D i started getting used to it towards the end.

I find that reading french is easier for me than writing it, and speaking it harder than writing it.

Bree (breej6434) | 2 comments i took french for two years in high school, and learned barly anything. my teacher wasn't much of one though in case any of you saw what i wrote in the i want to learn latin topic, but from what i did manage to learn i found speaking and reading easier than writing, cause i'm an all around horrible speller, and never really learned any of the rules for french. i think it depends on you and how you are learning it.

message 37: by Yasi (new)

Yasi | 3 comments I had to drop my french class cause i was so busy with my thesis...yet i don't want to forget things I have learned a group of french enthusiasts is all I needed:D
