Ok, guys ... some of you have read this one already. Get to talkin'.

Lynette | 20 comments Ok, I've a bone to pick with this one!
I started reading on Friday, it is now Saturday lunchtime and I'm about to begin book three.
Who needs clean clothes/home/feeding anyway?

I'm really enjoying the characterisations – there's a strong sense of humour and they are all flawed in a very believable way. Good stuff

Keisha (keishabird) This better be better than A Discovery of Witches

JanBreesmom (goodreadscomjanbreesmom) | 3 comments I really enjoyed this book...read in in two sittings...it's nice to read something different...

I had thought this was one we were reading in August, though...I see everyone's talking about it in July....LOL....guess the dates don't matter..cool. I won't wait on the next one.

The discussion on this? Don't tell me I missed it!

message 5: by Fernanda (new) - added it

Fernanda Bertino | 9 comments I read the book and liked it and will probably read the others in the series, BUT while reading this book I felt like I was reading a YA book. Let me make myself clear, I love YA books, but most of the books that I love never made me feel like I was reading a book strictly for a younger audience. I don't know if it was the humor or the fact that Sophie was kind of immature, I felt like I was reading a tween book. Though this is probably due to the fact I know my neighbors 11 year old just read this book.

JanBreesmom (goodreadscomjanbreesmom) | 3 comments It was a YA book, I agree. It took place in a school I could only describe as a high school and the subject matter was about coming of age...finding one's self; that said, as YA books go, I found it a refreshingly different book with different characters and story than most. I'm looking forward to reading the others in the series.

Dany (danyspike) I liked it, it was a really fast read and it was quite entertaining. Sophie's snarkiness(?) was a bit too much sometimes and it felt a bit forced (i.e, the first time she talkes to Alice). But just sometimes. The rest of the time is was ok.
I did enjoy the book and I'd like to read the next to see what happens with Archer.

Jenny | 46 comments This was a quick, light read. The whole demon vs. witch thing wasn't clearly explained, so I'm a little WTF as to the twist at the end.

Forget Archer, who was the healing hottie? Cal? More, please!

Jenny | 46 comments Also, how do you pronounce Hecate? HECK-ate? Heh-KATE? OR even Heh-cot-tay a la Tecate beer?

I also totally agree with Fernanda above; this really did feel like a YA read through and through. I love YA, but I don't always want to be conscious that I'm reading YA.

we are! we just ended our july book early because Nikki went away!

We'll discuss it at the end of the month!

I finished yesterday! What a fun, easy read except.... I had no idea it was a series (Yeah, I'm pretty sure we announced that but I didn't remember) so I was like..
WAIT WHAT??
WHAT ABOUT THE HOT GUY WITH THE EYE TATTOO?

because obviously that's all I care about. I'm a boy-crazed 14 year old over here.

Excited to discuss this. And read the other books! This would be a fun TV series. Great concept anyway....

Kathryn | 62 comments I agree with a lot of the above comments. This was a really quick and easy read but I also felt like I was reading a YA book. The teen-ness was super apparent whereas I didn't feel the teen so much in say, Twilight. :)
I agree with Jenny that the demon/witch stuff wasn't really clear. I read the book but maybe because it was so easy to read fast I glossed over a lot. I guess I feel like the focus was more on the teen angst and less on the supernatural. Like, Sophie lives with faeries, witches, werewolves and vampires but they're in a dorm and Nausicaa may be a faerie but more importantly she's also a stuck-up jerk. So anyway, at the end when there's that (view spoiler) I was kind of like, wait, what?
All that said, I did get the next two books (and also read them quickly) but I thought they got better as the series went on. I definitely liked the second book better than the first so I would recommend reading the next two if you have a few hours to spare. :)

YES. This would be a good TV series with all the supes at a boarding school and all the different supernatural hijinks that goes on. Is that the CW Network over there...?

message 14: by Dany (new) - rated it 3 stars

Dany (danyspike) That's good to know, Kathryn, I didn't know if it was worth reading the rest of the books, and now I know :)

Melanie Wagner Zickgraf I agree with the comments that it was definitely YA, much more so than others in this genre. That being said, sarcasm is my second language so this was kind of fun. It never felt like real danger or drama, just enjoyable like bubble gum for the mind.

I felt the same way Fernanda. It's not a criticism of the book, since it's SUPPOSED to be YA. But it was on the more juvenile spectrum of that scale (at least IMO). Less gravitas to this one than much of YA.

Sadie Fowers | 13 comments I just got a chance to watch the review. I enjoyed listening to you ladies. I agree that this book felt more YA than any other "official" YA I have read, but I also liked it a lot.
