The streets

Ember sat on the top of a trash can, he feet dangling and Scout by her side. She munched thoughtfully on a sandwich, her mind wandering to the Overcontrols-she was constantly thinking of them. She scowled and tried to push them out of her mind-which was practically impossible. She sighed in defeat and played with the frayed end of her dark gray sweater.

((Oh sorry tip, zombies are not called zombies, they are called Overcontrols and they are mutants. The types of overcontrols are in the informational folder))

Ember glanced over at the sound of footsteps, her sense alert. She quickly had her guard up as she strained and listened. Waiting. She was already off the trash can, Scout tense at her side. And then she mentally scolded herself. It was habit from a few months before. She wasn't used to being even remotely safe from the Overcontrols. It was all so different now. Ember sighed and glanced down at Scout, who still tense and rigid. "'S okay boy." Ember said, patting his head. He let out a low bark, but sat down on the pavement, like a good dog. "Good boy, Scout." She mumbled, a smile on her lips.

((Oh ember one more thing, theyre are no Overcontrols anywhere, only BEEs (military) and not allowed to have weapons in public))

Ember glanced down the street, her nerves tingling. She could sense eyes on her as the hands on her arms stood, she zeroed in on a figure maybe 50 or 60 yards from her. It was a female-the figure was much to slim to be a male, and much taller than Ember herself. She relaxed a fraction. The girl didn't appear to be threatening. But Ember still kept her gaze locked on her.

Ember's jaw dropped as the girl before her turned into a hazy, barely visible blur. She snapped her jaw shut and scolded herself for that reaction. She had seen mutants before, all the time while traveling across what once was the United States. But she had never seen one turn practically invisible! Ember sighed and uncurled her fists. The girl probably though she was 8 years old with her opened jaw and ridiculously short height. Scout gave a bark, and Ember commanded him down-he know better than to bark like that. She gave a small tap on the head, "You know better." She muttered, her voice low and hard as old habits itched to be brought out.

Ember watched as her image shimmered and became whole again-or obtained all the color back. She watched the girl, and thought she heard a chuckle. Great, she did think I was seven. Ember sighed and heard her ask who she was. With only a slight hesitation, she yelled, "My name is Emberlynn Victor." She patted Scout's head as she watched the girl, "And you are!?" She called back.

Ember pursed her lips, taking in the girl-Rennin. She seemed a bit defensive, or maybe protective...Ember stepped closer to Rennin, until she was only four feet away. "Nice to meet you, Rennin." Ember said, extending her hand. She usually wasn't this outright with people. Usually walked on, only caring for herself and her brother. But Rennin seemed different somehow. Scout sat submissive at Ember's heals, clearing not upset or put off by Rennin. Ember took this as a good sign and even curled her lips into a passable smile.

Ember bit back her temper as she lowered her hand, her eyes sparking. And why did she keep watching her!? "What is with the staring!?" Ember snapped, and then regretted it. She was obviously studying her, like Ember herself had done to so many. "Sorry." She mumbled as the girl just stared. Ember huffed a sigh and crossed her arms over her chest, and brought herself up to her full height of 4'8". She felt more in control when she felt taller. She didn't know why, she just did.

Ember rolled her eyes without meaning to. She promised herself now that she was in a safer place, she would lose the hard demeanor, but it wasn't working out well. "Look, it's been...hard adjusting to being here. In a safer place-a place with more people than overcontrols." She let out a humorless laugh. "So, sorry for my mood swings." Ember said, still trying to look tall-which wasn't going well as the girl was a whole foot taller.

Ember was a bit surprised at this. No-one she had ever met had ever really inquired about her age, despite her height and boy-ish figure. Not since the overcontrols, anyways. "I'm seventeen." Ember answered, unfolding her arms and sticking them in her jean pockets.

Ember fought the temper that surfaced-why didn't Rennin believe her?! "I assure you I'm seventeen." Ember said, her eyes locking on Rennin's. "How old are you?" Ember asked, getting the questions off her.

Koda walked down the street sighing. He had just come from that job to fix a BEE's car. Said BEE was irritable, and became angered when Koda was late. During the entire repair process the BEE irritated him, then shorted him on a tip. Taking a cigarette out of a pack in his pocket, he lit it up and pressed the but to his lips. It was around then that he noticed two girls talking. One looked younger than the other.

Ember followed Rennin's gaze and focused in on a man. He was thick and tall, muscled. Ember cocked an euebrow and watched as he pulled a cigarette from his pocket. She watched rhe cigarette with amusement. She hardly remembered those anymore. But she guessed others did. She watched the smoke waft in the air and let her gaze flicker back to Rennin's. Did she know him? Ember shook her short hair away from her face. Back to Rennin. She was 18? Ember smiled- she was only a year younger than Rennin. Ember liked this new fact, it made her feel not so little somehow.

Koda's eyes caught Renin's for a few seconds. He noticed the two girls were watching him, not that they were doing it discreetly or anything. He walked up to them, a slight frown still in his lips. "You guys have a problem?" He asked gruffly in response to their staring. His eyes scanned each of them up and down, he wanted to know what he was dealing with.

"Not just today, everyday really." He replied sarcastically. "I just walk down the street after hard work and I see you two giving me a look. Now unless you're checking me out, which maybe you were, but if not then we have a problem." He gave a smirk. Koda was a pretty good looking young man and he wasn't inexperienced in the ways of the opposite gender. Although, that didn't mean he always understood what woman did.

Ember watched as the man approached them, his eyes sparking with...anger? Irritation? She folded her arms across her chest, narrowing her eyes at him. He focused his attention onto Rennin and Ember rolled her eyes as he began speaking. This guys was so obviously arrogant and cocky. Scout had risen, his ears perked, his teeth bared, waiting and watching. But Ember knew he wouldn't do anything without her permission.

Ember laughed at Rennin's remark, but quickly covered it with a cough. Scout let out a bark, but with a flick of her wrist, Ember silenced it. She turned her attention back to Rennin, who was looking at the man with an almost amused expression.

"In your dreams, sweetheart." He said with a raised eyebrow. "Who are you two exactly?" The two girls didn't seem to be all that close as he examined their body language. They definitely weren't sisters or anything, they didn't even look similar. Koda took another drag of his cigarette, then absorbed their scents. He'd never know if they came in handy later. His power seemed very under control, the best since the incident a few days ago.

Ember watched the guy with slitted eyes. She didn't trust people in general, and while she didn't feel comfortable giving her name... oh well. "Ember she said at the same time Rennin gave him her name.

The girls seemed defensive against him but for some reason they still gave their names. He could smell that one was a mutant, but he couldn't tell which one. Maybe they knew something about the FireFlies so he could track them down. "Interesting names if ya ask me." He stated. "I'm Steve," He lied flawlessly, "and actually, I'm a psychic."

Ember raised her eyebrows as he mentioned his name. Steve? The most average and nondescript name for a guy like him? Ember sensed something off about him-Steve. But just sat back, her eyebrows raised and her lips zipped/

"Not a psychic you say? Well that's very narrow minded. There's mutants right? What if I happen to be a mutant with psychic powers?" He acted offended. Koda brought his fingers up to his temple and pretended to sense something. His face lit up after a few seconds and he stated. "My powers tell me you two just met." They didn't smell like each other, and didn't seem too close. It wasn't hard to figure out.

Kayla turned a corner, still a little excited from the knowledge that there were other mutants around here. She saw Koda out of the corner of her eye talking to a couple of girls and decided to leave him alone. He probably wouldn't want to be bothered by her again. When she stopped for a moment to tie her shoe, a man pulled her into an alleyway, his intentions pretty clear paired with the alcohol on his breath. Kayla bit her lip, really not wanting to cause trouble here. "Look, this really isn't a good idea... I don't want to hurt you." The man just clamped a hand over her mouth, making her react immediately. He screamed in pain, stumbling backwards away from her and attracting attention from the bystanders. "Great," Kayla muttered, hurrying past them. There was yet another place she wouldn't be able to be seen again.

Koda's head snapped up at a familiar scent. It was that girl he met the other day and had lost control. He heard a struggle, accompanied by the smell of alcohol, followed by a shout of pain. He ran towards the scene, not caring that Rennin had also followed. Well now he knew which one was the mutant, as Rennin became invisible. "Hey, what's going on Kayla?"

Kayla turned around to face the girl, raising her eyebrows. She was about to make some sort of sarcastic comment when she saw Koda running towards her as well. Now she'd gotten his attention. "Hey," she said to him, a little frazzled. She hated her power so much. Kayla had hurt that man without meaning to, and the guilt was already eating at her. The fact that he had maybe meant to rape her made no difference. She shifted nervously, looking at Koda. For some reason she was so self-conscious around him still. Hopefully he wasn't just another person who would be afraid of her. "I didn't mean to hurt him," she blurted out, never seeming to say the right thing to the other mutant she didn't even know that well.

"Well it seemed like that guy was a drunk bastard. He was trying to hurt you, so you can say it was self defense. If the BEE find out though..... They might not be too happy." Koda said thinking things out. "Just tell me that the guy won't die from this. That will make things messy." He didn't know why he wanted to help her, since they really didn't know each other well. It was probably because he owed her for what happened when they had first met,

Kayla shook her head, looking bewildered. "No, he won't die. He's just in a lot of pain and... What happens if they find out?" She had never had an incident with the BEE and knew close to nothing about them. When one lived in a secluded cabin by herself in a forest, news didn't exactly spread quickly. Kayla looked around at the people, some of them giving her cautious looks. "I need to get out of here," she mumbled to herself, breathing hard.

"Not so fast." Koda grabbed Rennin's wrist. "You're going to help us. Can you make her invisible too? Get her out of here without being seen?" This could work. If Kayla could get out of here, then He could deal with the drunken man, make it seem like he had beaten the man up for attacking a friend. "If it's any use, my names actually Koda, and I'm a mutant too. Beast Transformation. Now help." He didn't seem desperate, but calm and clearly thinking.

Kayla looked at the other girl. So she was a mutant too. But she wasn't going to let him take the blame for this or whatever he was thinking of doing. "No, don't get involved, Koda. I'll just go stay in my cabin until this all dies down. If someone follows I can handle it." She looked him in the eyes, not wanting to be the cause of his problems more than anything. "Just tell me honestly, what are the BEE going to do if they find out? I just want to know." She knew one thing though: If he was caught being involved in the violence, they'd torture him before giving him a final sentence and Kayla wouldn't let that happen. He had no reason to be honest with her, let alone help her. Yet here he was and she had never been more thankful.

"Well they won't be too happy, that's for sure." He turned away to head back to the drunken man. "Now go with Rennin here and get away from this place before people start asking questions. I'll find you guys by your scent after I handle this." Without waiting for approval, he headed into the alley to the drunken man and grabbed him by the collar. He was passed out, and hopefully didn't remember too much. Koda grabbed his shirt collar and have him a nice punch in the face. Then another on the back of the head. Then one in the stomach, and a kick in the groin. The man started to wake up from shock and blinked at Koda. "That's what you get for attacking my friend." He spat in the confused man's face. It seemed to click in the man's mind that the pain he felt was just Koda beating him up, to save his friend. Nothing unnatural or mutant like here. "And you better not tell anyone about what happened today because I'll tell about how you tried to rape my friend." The scared man nodded weakly as he was let go and dropped to the ground. After getting another glare, he scurried off to where he came.

Kayla stopped breathing as she watched the events unfold in front of her. She didn't care to check whether or not she was invisible or whatever this other mutant could do, instead focusing on Koda threatening the man. If anything, it just felt worse. Now she was responsible for the man's pain and fear, not to mention the possibility that Koda could get in trouble for her mistakes. Kayla refused to move, ready to reveal that she was a mutant if the slightest threat appeared. He shouldn't have done that for her, or for anyone else. It was as if he didn't even value his life when it came to helping out with the situation. All the same he was the only person who had ever done anything to help her and so far didn't seem too scared by her unpredictable power.

Koda was aware that the two were watching him, something he hoped wouldn't happen. Of course they wouldn't have listened to him. He figured it was a mutant's nature, based off the others he had met. When the man was out of view and definitely not coming back, Koda turned around with a slight frown on his face. "I know you're there. I can smell you. What happened to getting out of here?" At least everything here seemed to work out. The man would pass it off as getting attacked by Koda, and wouldn't report it in order to keep his sexual assault off the record. The boy sighed in relief and lit another cigarette to calm the now riled up 'beast' down.

Kayla looked at Koda, a little wary of him though he had helped her out. The very fact that he did made her feel as though there was something he wanted from her because people didn't just do that for strangers. Especially strangers who could very well hurt them without meaning to at any time. But then a part of her believed that Koda knew what it was like to be that way. "You shouldn't have done that," she said, knowing she'd live indebted to him now. It would have been easier on her conscience to just let them go after her instead. "But thank you. I owe you."

"I told you." He murmured as a puff of smoke passed between his lips, " The name's Koda. Happy?" The 'beast' inside him seemed to be dormant now, and wouldn't be a problem. He walked toward the two girls slowly. "You don't owe me. As long as you didn't tell anyone what happened last time we met." It was a way of getting the information he needed. How did those FireFly know he was a mutant? Where were they getting their information? These were things he was going to find out somehow.
