Richard Friedman | 9 comments Anyone still active in this group? My first novel is out with a giveaway on Goodreads and this group would love the Twilight Zone style ending.

I was hoping when I was searching for Rod Serling and/or Twilight Zone groups that it was active. I am surprised this is the only one. I live in Binghamton,NY where Rod Serling grew up. It doesn't look active though...

Richard Friedman | 9 comments You live in Binghamton? That's the mecca for Twilight zone fans. Have you seen the merry-go-round? I heard an artist created special frames from episodes that fit around the ride. You can purchase smaller copies online, or buy the set. I guess there's two of us now.
I think you'd love the ending. I just finished the giveaway, but if you'd give it an honest review on Goodreads (and Amazon if possible,) I'll send you a free copy. Send your address and I'll send the book your way.
Richard

La La Yes, I have ridden that carousel many hundreds of times in my childhood and with my son. Infact, my son and I were discussing the panels the other day because after he and his (college age) friends finished playing frisbee, in that park, they all jumped on the carousel. Binghamton is part of three cities that have grown together, called the Triple Cities (really original, huh?), and we actually have six Hershell (sp?) 'Merry-go-rounds' in our area; all still functioning and free of charge.

Do you know where Willoughby is in Ohio? I guess they have had a festival there for the past three years celebrating the Last Stop Willoughby Twilight Zone episode. They say there is a definite connection because if Rod was traveling by bus from NY to California, he would have had to have transfered in Willoughby. Anyway, Anne Serling, Rod's daughter, is going to be there signing her new book about her father this weekend.

Speaking of Anne, she is an acquaintance of mine and I want to start a fanpage for her book on here. Would you join it if I do? I'm sure she will stop in for chats.

I would love to read your book. I will send you a friend request and then message you my address. I am warning you though, I am brutally honest when it comes to my opinions on books. I belong to two book clubs on MyLeaky (a Harry Potter social site) and I will definitely 'talk up' your book if I like it.

Richard Friedman | 9 comments I work in Willoughby! It's so ironic. I own a company called Lake Erie Interlock. We put breathalyzers in cars or trucks for people who get DUI's (often multiple DUI's). We also put ankle bracelets on people who need to be tracked. I meet some interesting people, no doubt about that. The conversation at the dinner table is something to hear. I don't use real names, but I tell the family about the oddballs I meet. Some are downright evil, (rape, stalking, etc...) most just made a mistake in judgement and I try not to judge them too harshly. I don't have much tolerance for someone that drinks and drives, but I understand it can happen to good people too. Back to the subject...
Willoughby is about 30 minutes away from my house in Solon. It's a suburb of Cleveland. I haven't heard about the festival? I'll have to check it out. That would be a "can't miss".
As for my book, if all I want to hear is kind words, I'd never put the book out there for the public and take a chance. Please send the friend request and the book is yours. Have a great weekend.
Richard

La La I have friends in Kent. I'll have to ask them if they have heard about the festival.

Your line of work must give you some good book fodder.

message 7: by Richard (new)

Richard Friedman | 9 comments I found all the info at the News Herald newspaper website. The festival is 2 miles from my office. Thanks to you, I'll get a chance to tell her in person how much her father's show meant to me as a viewer, and as a writer. There are many "Twilight Zone" references in my book, most people wouldn't catch them, you likely will. The twist at the end will make say "Yep, like epsiode... Hey, I can't give it all away before you read the book! Thanks again for the tip!
My friends want me to write about the criminals I meet. As an example, check out today's News Herald and look up Wil Wigfield.( 20 years for rape) He's public domain news now and I can mention him by name. My GPS transmitter is still floating down the Tuscarawas River, too bad it's out of power or I might be able to find it!

La La The first episode I remember seeing was Nightmare at 20,000 Feet. I was seven and it scared the begeezus out of me. LOL. The funny thing is, I didn't even know he was from Binghamton until I was in high school. Nobody talked about it. Now they have a Rod Serling Day at all of the local schools and they have guest speakers. Anne was here last year and spoke at the high school. They also take a field trip to the small Serling museum we have. The High School has the Rod Serling School of Fine Arts, of which my son is a graduate. He has a line drawing likeness of Rod on his diploma. The manager of the high school theater also runs a video contest for kids from K through 12 named for Rod. It was just NY State, but I think it is national now.

Thayer Berlyn I was very much hoping this group might be more active. My writing and reading taste is very much influenced by visual story, especially Night Gallery. In film, the most recent delight for me was The Others. It was fabulously atmospheric and thought-provoking.

What I enjoyed so deeply about Rod Serling, was his depth of insight into the frailties of being human. This is what strikes me most with Ray Bradbury's work as well.

My author page is The Haunted Quill, linked as follows: http://moonlightintheattic.blogspot.com/

Richard Friedman | 9 comments What a thrill I had last saturday when I exchanged signed copies of our books with Anne Serling. She was in Willoughby, Ohio as the Grand Marshall for "Last Stop Willoughby festival". I got a chance tell her in person how much influence her father had in my writing and that there were a few "Twilight Zone" references in my book that she would pick up on right away. A special thanks to Linda "La La" from this group for telling me about it in time for me to go meet her.
I'd like to go back and re-watch Night Gallery as an adult. I recall not being a big fan of the show despite my deep admiration for Mr. Serling.

I am so delighted you were able to get to the festival and meet Anne!! I would really love to go next year. How far is it from Kent?

message 13: by La La (new)

La La It is too bad "Victor" isn't around to add the books to this group list.

I also wanted to comment on Night Gallery. I did like it, but I didn't love it as I did The Twilight Zone, and to a lesser degree The Outer Limits. It was one of those shows where one segment would be fantastic and the next awful. I don't think Rod wrote too many of those stories, if any at all. I will have to check.

Linda,

I'm not sure which Victor you mean, but this one has a free short story today only (September 5) on Amazon (The day the Dolphins Vanished). You can download it at http://www.amazon.com/Dolphins-Vanish...

Well, seeing that your profile pic is an exact match to the "mod" for this group, then it is you and only you who can add Anne's book about her father Rod Serling and Richard's book, inspired by Rod Serling, to the group's bookshelf.I am happy you are still around to mod the group!!

I was not aware that I was moderating this group and thought it inactive until I noticed a posting on my email. My day job and research agenda have kept me quite busy over the past year. I'll add the books presently.

Thanks.

Victor

On the home page of this group underneath where it says moderator it says Victor and shows your picture. This is where I got the idea that you were the moderator.

Very cool!! Sorry I haven't been around much, but that should change in a few days as I am nearing the end of a project. Anne was at a comicon in our city and I wanted to post about that a little. There was also a a "review" of her book, and I used the quotes because it was so much more than a review,I wanted to post the link to. Al.so, I wanted to say how AWESOME the internet is because on Billy Mum's FB page I was able to talk to him about Rod when he was reminiscing the Twilight Zone!!

La La Is anyone familiar with this?http://www.rodserlingbooks.com/

They say they promote new writers. After I look into it I am going to ask Anne if she knows anything about it. I don't know if it is legit or not.
