Sandra (sanddune) puffery- hype, exaggerated self-commendation

message 3: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Can I just say that "fey" is one of my favorite words? I don't even know why. It just has kind of an old-world feel about it, without being unusable in today's society. I love seeing it in books.

My word of the day is:
Piebald: \PYE-bawld\ adjective

1: of different colors; especially : spotted or blotched with black and white
*2 : composed of incongruous parts

(This word has been popping up everywhere for me lately. It's an interesting word, and doesn't look like it would mean what it does, so I like it. :) )

message 4: by O2 (new)

O2 Interesting word but I don't know how I would work it into a conversation.

Sandra (sanddune) As a former teacher I have to add the noise made by elementary students learning to play in the band.It is a wonderfully expressive word. Thanks.

That's a very onomatopoeic word!

☺Caleb☻ Sanders (killerkittyklaws) | 163 comments Protocoligorical
(I dont know the meaning exactly..... = ]

message 10: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I read that wrong, I read proctocoligorical and I thought I bet it has something to do with .. well you know what procto... usually means :-)

I don't think the word is a real one, its a made-up one from a song, Protocoligorically Correct from the musical Slipper and the Rose. It means (in the song) to stick to protocol basically. Better meaning than my misinterpretation!

Marsha (earthmarsha) Louche is a great word, Cammieo!

message 13: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) That is a fab word Patricia! I think I am guilty of that :)

La pointe de la sauce (k1ng) | 5 comments I love the word 'namby-pamby' -lacking in vigour, wishy-washy. Good description of the democrats effort with the health care bill.

Piebald is a coloring for horses...

Think of National Velvet...she rode a Piebald...named Pie (for Piebald) and tried to win the Grand National. Great story for anyone who loves horses.

message 16: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Foppery

Noun

1. Foolish character or action : folly
2. The behavior or dress of a fop.

message 17: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) ok...here's on I will never use, but it sounds funny...

Nidifugous
(nye-DIFF-yuh-gus)
Adjective
-Leaving the nest soon after hatching.

Juxtapose
(JUK-stuh-pohz)
verb
-to place side by side

You know when you say a word, and have an amorphous idea of what it means...but don't know EXACTLY what is means...that was Juxtapose for me.

message 18: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenwb) I love foppery and actually have used it on occasion.

Here's one....

Pes´ti`duct
n. 1. That which conveys contagion or infection.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, published 1913 by C. & G. Merriam Co.

My teenage son has been using it to "dis" people in high school.
