H. (hanthe) I only technically 'bought' this one, because our library's summer reading program includes a free book voucher, but I got Wool and will read it....after I read all my libray books.

Lianne (eclecticreading) Went on a bit of a spree recently (backlash, I suppose, from the self-book-buying-ban I imposed on myself two months ago) and bought the following (physical and eBooks):

- Kate Morton's The Secret Keeper (it was on with 30% off and I've been eyeing it for so long so I was happy to get the paperback; it matches my other books by her quite nicely :))
- Graeme Simsion's The Rosie Project (everyone's been talking about this book lately on Twitter and in the bookstore so I picked it up. I read it last week and OMG, I recommend it if you're looking for a light and fun read. Heart it so much)
- Rhidian Brook's The Aftermath (been curious about this title and it was on sale at Kobo so I got it for my eReader)
- Nancy Richler's The Imposter Bride (this was shortlisted I think for the Giller Prize last year. Never got around to it until I saw the sale so I snatched it up for my eReader)
- Jennie Rooney's Red Joan (it sounded interesting, it was also on sale so I bought it for my eReader)
- Jeffrey Eugenides' The Virgin Suicides (finally got my own copy of this novel; can't wait to re-read it. The special Vintage Canada edition is quite pretty too :))
- Yukako Kabei's Kieli, Volume 8: The Dead Sleep Eternally in the Wilderness, Part 1 (the last volume is coming out next month and I realised I never picked up this volume. I really hope the story picks up now)
- Travis Holland's The Archivist's Story (my friend recommended this book to me years and years ago so I finally got my hands on a copy. Excited to read this! :))

You'll have to let us know what you think about Wool, H. I actually read it with another GR group where we had quite a long conversation about it. I don't want to pepper your thoughts before you go into it, lest I influence your reading.

The manga was actually very faithful to the first novelisation, which was cool (I read the manga first and loved it, which prompted me to the novels). I enjoyed the first 3 light novels but then it started to drag. I'm hoping that things will pick up in these final 2 volumes though, fingers crossed!

Ma'Belle (linguisticness) | 54 comments I just bought The Collection: Short fiction from the transgender vanguard the other night at a public reading by Imogen Binnie, whose first novel (Nevada) I also bought and read earlier this summer. I've also recently bought:
Gaiman's newest, The Ocean at the End of the Lane and Odd and the Frost Giants.

Animal Man volumes 1-4 (of v2, starting with Grant Morrison's famous and influential run)
Locke and Key, Vol. 5: Clockworks
Saga, Volume 2
Rude Girls and Dangerous Women
SUBGurlz
No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics, Fun Home: a Family Tragicomic., The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking, Marvel 1602, Welcome to Birdland, Gifts
The Devil's Panties are all other books I've purchased in the last month. Some books I've bought that aren't on goodreads include Super Indian vol. 1 by Arigon Starr and a crowdfunded black and white horror comic anthology called The Sleep of Reason (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/i...).

I'm down to chat about any of these if anyone's curious. Some are already well-known but others are less-known gems.

I totally get that. My partner and I took turns reading chapters aloud at bedtime, and I found it perfect for that purpose. I have various collections of faerie and folk tales, some of which are meant to be read aloud, but it's hard to find ones that stimulate pleasant dreams rather than societal and psychological fears. Odd and the Frost Giants gave us more positive imaginings within a short, cute story. Gaiman says at the end of the fantastically clever autobio page (which is its own short story!) that he wrote it for World Book Day in the UK, so the brevity was likely a prerequisite. It'd be like publishers putting out lots of NaNoWriMo books for free in the U.S. Gaiman also says he "thinks there are more stories about Odd he would like to tell." So let's hope that happens!

Lianne (eclecticreading) I recently ordered Patricia McKillip's The Tower at Stony Wood and In The Forests of Serre. It was going for a very good price at the Book Depository and I've been meaning to read more of McKillip's books, I really enjoy her storytelling.

message 8: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) Okay, so after a few weeks for not going to the comic book store, I finally picked up everything in my box. Huzzah!

The only TP I got was:
Revival, Volume One You're Among Friends (Revival, #1) by Tim Seeley
Revival. I really wish I had gotten into this one at the ground floor, as I usually do, but alas I did not so I bought the TP, and if I really dig it I'll put it on my pull list at the comic book store.

For my monthly floppies I got:

Saga #13 by Brian K. Vaughan Trillium #1 by Jeff Lemire The Walking Dead, Issue #113 by Robert Kirkman Lazarus #2 by Greg Rucka

Also: Satellite Sam #2, Sheltered #2, Fatale #16 (none of which happen to be in GR from what I can tell at the moment).

I also got the first issue of East of West since I've heard it brought up several times in the past few weeks, and I thought I'd give the first issue a go.

I usually shy away from western themed stuff, but what the hell.

Of course I read Saga #13 last night. That is always the one I read first. Absolutely wonderful, it's always great reading this again after their annual 2-month break. I was really struck by the first page. There's no text, but there is SO MUCH going on, which follows onto the second page, and I think is a pretty damning, albeit subtle, indictment of how the US treats their veterans.

Lianne (eclecticreading) I picked up a copy of Diana Wynne Jones's Howl's Moving Castle and Peter Ackroyd's Foundation while at the bookstore today xD
