Ian Mcmillan | 3 comments I've been a huge fan of James Herbert's books for many years. Upon hearing of his death earlier this year I decided to go back and read some of his earlier novels. I've also re-read a few (Magic Cottage, Once). It's sad there won't be another new Herbert book in the future. Any suggestions of his earlier novels?

I decided to revisit his books myself. There are quite a number that I have never read, so I've started with 'The Dark'. I've just started part two, and so far am enjoying it.

I think my favourites are 'The Ghosts of Sleath' and 'The Secret of Crickley Hall'. Not his earlier works, I know, but in my opinion the best.

Of his earlier works I would always recommend the Rats trilogy, Magic Cottage (which you have already mentioned), Others and Haunted.

Asking you the same question, apart from those I have mentioned, could you recommend any?

H Hunt | 6 comments #Ian- James Herbert died? How did I miss that, I didn't even know...that sux. My favorite so far is Haunted. I love the movie version as well which as am sure y'all know hardly ever translates 2 a great film that does a book justice. But in this case the movie in my opinion was an awesome ghost story. Do y'all agree?

Ian (snapper62) | 5 comments I have some catching up to do because the last book I read was HAUNTED some years ago, which I highly recommend. Having read all his earlier books my favourites have got to be THE FOG and FLUKE. I thought THE FOG was the scariest, and FLUKE is just an amazing story and so different to any of his other novels. They even made a good TV movie of it. I so wished John Carpenter's THE FOG was based on James's novel.
Can't forget the RATS trilogy.

Ian Mcmillan | 3 comments Andy -- I really enjoyed Nobody True. How could you not enjoy a novel with the opening line, "I wasn't there when I died." A great book. Ghosts of Sleath was really good too as was 48.

Ian Mcmillan | 3 comments H -- where I'm from (Canada) no James Herbert movies have come to the big screen or little screen. I'll have to check online.

H Hunt | 6 comments #Ian- Haunted came out in 1995, starring Aidan Quinn & Kate Beckinsale it's rated R. If you've never seen it check it out its a really good movie. It's somewhat erotic like the story -_-

H Hunt | 6 comments #Ian- I looked it up & found that "Fluke" was made into a movie & "The Survivor", also "Deadly Eyes" which idk if that's based on the Rats or not. Also I read the the "L.O C H" came out in episodes on TV I presume but I've read that novel & never heard of a series about it on any network I know about. Possibly the BBC but it looks like it received bad reviews. M gnna try & track it down though. Plz let me know what u think of "Haunted". M sure u can find it online or @ the movie rental. *-*

Andy Downs (andydowns) | 16 comments Ian, thanks for those suggestions. I have just bought Nobody True to read after The Dark.
I will let you know how I get on.

Andy Downs (andydowns) | 16 comments Also forgot to say I can vouch for the Haunting film, I really enjoyed it.
If you can get hold of The Secret of Crickley Hall, it's also well worth a watch.
All we need now is for The Ghosts of Sleath to be made into a series of film.
