It is an entertaining mess.By this point the movies are 'Wolverine and his amazing friends', and they did a grave injustice to the Dark Phoenix saga, but there were lots of good character moments, action scenes ( my daughter loves the Kitty Pryde vs Juggernaut fight), Kelsey Grammer was born to play the Beast and really, any comic fan could spend five minutes and bring back all three of the characters they killed.
I'm just bummed that we never got to see a version of the original five together in the movies. We bring in Beast and Angel, only to lose Cyclops.
William wrote: "My only problem with the original five is that they weren't that popular in their day and I can't help but feel that there might have been a reason for that. I agree that Kelsey Grammer was a great..."I would have settled for a group shot of the original five. Just looking for a nod to X-history.
I am sadly aware that I am never going to get a movie featuring them until the franchise crashes and years later they do a relaunch, as now it's all about Wolverine, Xavier and Magneto.
I would have liked for X-Men First Class to actually have the original team. It would have contradicted the other movies, but I think that they could have done a good reboot. No one ever asks me though. I like what they did in this (alternate version)
I liked Kelsey Grammer's Beast and Ellen Paige's Kitty. My issues:
There was too much focus on Wolverine and to little focus on the emotional impact of the Dark Phoenix on Jean herself and the rest of the team.
Killing Xavier??? In this time? In this place? NOT appropriate!
THEN! Jean is supposed to recognize the damage she is doing. She kills the Dark Phoenix and herself by proxy. This is what made her heroic.
So enter Mr Claws who runs her through... And I leap to my feet. In a packed movie house. At a premier. And yell:'What the hell! Are they nuts?'
My husband was so embarrassed. Now, when we watch Xmen movies, there is a firm grip on my hand, which tightens if I start muttering or make a sudden move for the popcorn!
