Castle of Dawn

The pale light of early dawn shines softly on the cold hard stones of the huge castle on the cliff. Tall, spiral, asymmetrical and jagged, it rises like an imposing beast. Soldiers in armor march about. Horses neigh in the stable, the dogs bark in the kennels. The sound of steel on steel comes from the yard where the new recruits train.

As Renn finally pushes over that las ridge, he stops dead right where he is. He'd imagined this moment a thousand times in his mind, but now that he is here, there is nothing he can do but stare. It arcs up, jagged, asymmetrical, vast.
And teeming with people who say one thing and mean another.
He heads down towards it, into this world of crossed loyalties and selective truths.

He reviewed the story in his head as he approached. He was Renn O'Farley, a minstrel, coming to perform for the upcoming feast and beyond. He nodded. It was more than plausible. He just had to convince them.
And, in the meantime, figure out who it was that had made the last three attempts on the life of the king.
And what their next move would be.

At the gate, he was confronted by a knight.
