Rhianna I loved the cat story, of course. But owner's human story made me kind of depressed. Have a box of that Kleenex with aloe ready when you start the book. I read the books months ago and I want to cry just thinking about it.

Kelley The way it was written was great. To mix the humans and cats was genius. A great way to learn you history. Dewey sure had a great personality and was venturous. You fall into the Dewey world and cry with them.

Yorky Caz A fab read - I think this was the start of my cat reads addiction lol has anyone read [book:Homer's Odyssey: a Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned About Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat|6261477A very good read

No but i will look into those. Have you tried Mrs. Murphy Mystery's, The Cat Who series, Midnight Louie Series, or Joe Grey mystery?

Cheryl I liked this book quite a bit, but the sequel doesn't have the same fresh charm - it's more contrived and feels more amateurish, to me.

GSGS Didn't know it had a sequel...

this is practically the only book I've read that's made me cry...

Dewey's Nine Lives: The Legacy of the Small-Town Library Cat Who Inspired Millions
by Vicki Myron

Here you go. Hope you like it. I still need to read it.

Jacki I do not think I will be reading the sequel.. how can a book have a sequel if the cat has already passed away? I loved Dewey, but I am going to pass on the sequel.

Thanks :)

Cheryl right - the sequel is about the people touched by their experiences with Dewey - ok if you liked that part but if you liked the cat part more, take a pass...

I haven't read the first one yet, but I have it on my TBR list. Sure hope I like it!

Abigail I like a sweet, simple story about a cat mainly because I like cats. I feel sorry that I missed meeting Dewey in person. I cried at one part, the obvious one.

Shayla I love this book because it's a heart felt story that reminds me about when I had to put down my doggy. The great times we had together. I had a chance to meet Dewey, but we were out of town that time.

I read both books, Dewey and Homer. I loved Homer's story even more than Dewey's, although I enjoyed both. I wish my library had a Dewey, although I'd find it even harder to leave the library then LOL

Abigail LOL Cindy. I love bookstores with cats, too, and I can never get out of bookstores anyway.

Kiessa I loved Dewey. I did not love the author's voice and style of writing so much...

Jade aka MrsTosh I really enjoyed this book, being a cat lover the antics Dewey got upto made me smile and reminds me of my own cats who both have their own personalities. I think all Libraries should have cats :)

Beth DEWEY is a five-star book. And that's from a person critical of most books she reads.

I didn’t read it until recently because I was afraid it would be a tear jerker. It is. But the cover picture of that cat finally proved irresistible.

If you like cats, you’ll love this book. And there’s enough description of library work that librarians would also enjoy this book, regardless of how they feel about cats. But a librarian who is also a cat owner absolutely should not miss DEWEY.

Some of DEWEY is funny, all of it is touching. But it’s more than a MARLEY-type book, with descriptions of crazy incidents.

I expected the book to be about cat antics. But Myron actually tells us how Dewey helped so many people on a daily basis, truly helped them. He even improved the library. And it even may not be a stretch to say that he gave some status to the small town of Spencer, Iowa. Sure, cat antics are in there, but they’re part of the stories of a cat who loved everyone and helped the lives of so many.

Mary Beth, I'm a cat person and my sister is a cat whisperer. I generally mistrust animal books like this, as you apparently did also. But now, I've got something lovely, not treacly, to add to gifts for my sister. THANKS!

PS: And of course it's not a Marley! This is a CAT!!!!

Donna I just loved Dewey. I would like a cat like Dewey; so charming.

Lori Judy wrote: "I love animal books but Dewey was just so-so. The cat part of the story was great, but the human part took over the book IMO. I won't be picking up the sequel either." I agree that i was not interested in the human part of this book. Dewey was the reason for reading this book.

Cat Loved this book! It made me cry every time!

Jayden I havn't read this book in a few years but I remember it was a really good book I think. Can anyone refresh me on what the book was about please?

Carol Dewey was the greatest! How could you not love him? I loved it that people drove out of their way just to meet Dewey. I would have if I had known about him. He was really quite a dude....

Jayden That's what the book's about???? It doesn't really sound like a summary to me.

Carol Sorry - I didn't read the post before mine - book is about a library cat named after the Dewey Decimal System. Lived in the library of a small town for several years. Dropped into the return book slot as a small kitten and adopted by the library. Loved people and people loved him. He was the good will ambassador of the library and thought he "owned" the library. Read it -- it's a good book whether you love cats or not. Dewey is a marvelous cat!

Carol I should say "read the book again." You can never get enough of Dewey!!!

Jayden Ya! Cause I already read the book but only a few years ago. Ya that sounds like the book! Now I remember! Thanks a lot! How many times did u read it?

Carol Couple of times....I'm a cat lover. Looks like you might be also (from your picture)...

Jayden Yup! I am a cat lover. And in my picture, that's my cat. Do u have any cats?

Carol Have always - all my life -- currently have two -- Mickey and Finn. Despite the names, they are girls...

Jayden Awwwwwwwwww!

Jayden EVERYONE!!!!!???? There is a sequel? Well what's it about if the cat is already dead?

Scott Maybe he had some kids they didn't know about.

Jayden I think they would've known if Dewey had kittens because it's not like they never paid any attenetion to him. They loved him and paid lots of attention to him. They would've noticed if there was something different about him and if he did have kids, they would've either been with Dewey or running around the library.

Scott You'd be surprised at what you find hiding in the stacks...

Jayden Librarians look through the books every day and the kittens wouldn't be so skinny that u can't see them inbeetween the books. Plus, people looking at the books take books out and they's see the kittens. There is a very low chance they wouldn't find the kittens and they would come out of beetween the books sometimes or a lot. For all we know, he might've not even had kittens!

Carol Dewey didn't have kittens - especially since he was a boy cat and no females were in sight. The second book was about other people's cats who had written to Dewey's library "mom" about their owns cats and were inspired by Dewey's life. Dewey's mom picked several of these people and wrote the second book about their cats' lives with their "people."

Jayden Is that book better than the first one because it doesn't sound better?

Carol No, first one is best.

Jayden Okay, thanks. Then there's no point in spending my time reading it and spending my money on it if it isn't even that good.

Jayden There's much better books to be reading than the second dewey I guess. Right?

Carol Reread the first Dewey -- much better....

Jayden I havn't read the second Dewey and I don't have it soooo I'm not gonna get it. So what Do you mean by "Reread the first Dewey--much better...." if I havn't even read the second one???

Brenna Judy wrote: "I love animal books but Dewey was just so-so. The cat part of the story was great, but the human part took over the book IMO. I won't be picking up the sequel either."

Ditto.
I started reading this book expecting a cute cat story, and ONLY a cute cat story. Kinda a let-down when the author started stuffing in an autobiography. *sigh*

Jane Freund I have heard that this book is going to be made into a movie. Has anybody have more details? This book is one of my definite favorites!

Scott Dewey will be played by Steve Buscemi.
