E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) The sound of water sloshing over the rocks sounded through the trees and Gabriella pulled sharply on the reins causing the tan coloured horse to slow to a gentle trot.
"Woah boy, easy." She murmured beneath her breath, her voice low and husky, barely sounding audible amongst the clamour of the woodland around them. It was a typically normal day in the forests, the sun was shining down through the trees and bird song was cutting clearly through the air from the canopy above. Gabriella didn't say another word as the horse stopped and stamped his hooves, disrupting the earth beneath his feet. She pushed her hood back away from her face and took a moment to look around the waters edge, it was these precious moments that were necessary. The careful time taken to check, survey and ensure the area was safe. In a place where living or dying could be an inevitability it was a must in order to protect and prevent disaster. Gabby deftly moved the reins to one hand and slid from the saddle, attaching her steed Shade to a nearby tree and taking a careful walk over the slippery rocks to the waters edge. Her keen dark eyes surveyed the waters edge as she dropped her rucksack from her aching shoulders and pulled her water canister from within- the last thing she needed was to find one of the infected in the water source. Still she was parched and Gabby needed water if she wanted to survive. She unscrewed the cap, plunging the bottle into the water and leaving it to fill for a moment before pulling it out and replacing it in her bag. Gabby sighed deeply and pushed her hair out of her face, watching the water travelling off down river and into the distance. Despite the lack of quarantine presence here in the wilderness it was strangely peaceful, still she ought to get moving again before nightfall, Gabriella was hoping to reach the city the following morning.

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Shade whinnied beneath the tree and tugged on the rein, his feet stamping against the earth in evident anxiety. Gabby watched him carefully for a moment, her dark eyes steely before her head whipped around and she surveyed the river once again. She chewed her lip and got to her feet, somewhat panicked at the prospect of being caught out here alone. What if it was a mutant? Or worse an over control? Gabriella only had so many bullets left and she wasn't capable of taking on a whole horde of them. She swallowed and slipped her rifle from her shoulders, holding it with two hands and aiming down the river. "Come out! I know you're there." Gabby said, though her voice wavered slightly and it was clear she was afraid. She wasn't certain but the way Shade was acting indicated that she wasn't the only one who had come to drink from the river.

message 4: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabby cocked the gun and checked the bullets left in the chamber before hoisting it back to eye level, her palms were slick against the wooden handle and she could already feel her heart thumping in her throat. She jumped slightly hearing the voice that replied, it was a girl's voice quite high pitched but not in the annoying scratchy sort of way. Gabriella swallowed nervously and gripped the rifle tightly between her fingers as her breathing picked up a little, "You first." She replied, moving the barrel from side to side as she attempted to seek out the owner of the voice. "Come out where I can see you." Gabby continued, she didn't really make an imposing figure a slight sixteen year old girl with a curtain of dark hair and a gun that frankly looked far too big for her.

message 5: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabriella swung the gun around as a figure became slightly visible through the dappled light of the trees. She gripped the gun more tightly in her hands and aimed it towards the tree line, trying to ward off the other person as best she could. Shade stamped his hooves impatiently against the earth but didn't make another sound. Gabby chewed her lip, biting down a little too hard as she saw that the girl too was armed with a bow and arrow. Taking a deep breath Gabriella listened to the girls words and gently lowered the rifle so that it rested against her thigh. "Deal." She murmured, loud enough for the other girl to hear as she walked out between the trees. Her stance was still cautious however and her eyes were wary as she watched the other girl who was still partially obstructed from view by the trees.

message 6: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabriella took a moment to consider whether she ought to tell the other girl her name before shrugging her shoulders, "I'm Gabby." She replied stiffly, though the gun was lowered she had not slackened her grip on it. Gabriella deliberated for a moment longer before answering the girl with regard to her reason for being there in the woods. "I came from the Florida quarantine zone, it was destroyed and I've been trying to reach civilisation since." Gabby replied flatly, not dropping her dark gaze from the girl with the bow and arrow. Her eyes flickered briefly to her horse who still stood back in the shadows and she considered escape for a moment before returning her attention to the other girl. "What about you then? Name?" She asked, folding her free arm across the other.

message 7: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabriella nodded slowly as the girl replied with her own name, it was not one that Gabby was familiar with nor had she ever heard it before but it was interesting nonetheless. She shifted her grip on the gun as the girl mentioned simply waking up in the forest, the idea of blacking out and awaking elsewhere scared Gabriella a little, she'd heard stories of people with strange powers and mutations what if this girl was one of them. "You're lucky the overcontrols didn't find you." Gabby muttered, her expression somewhat sour as she surveyed Evarinne in front of her. She still didn't trust the girl but then she didn't have a great deal to go by either. Gabby swallowed and looked down at her feet. "Maybe we should go together?" She suggested, regretting her idea the instant it left her lips. Gabby didn't know this girl, she had no idea what the other person was capable of and yet she didn't want to be stuck here alone either.

message 8: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabriella shrugged and gently tapped the handle of the gun with her thumb, "I dunno, I figured if you'd wanted to hurt me you would have already." She murmured, absently tucking a loose curl of hair behind her ear, her dark eyes surveying the girl across the water. Gabby pursed her lips and glanced over to wear her horse was feeding on the grass by the bank. "Not entirely." She murmured, hoisting her rifle back onto her shoulder and rolling her shoulder to settle it into place. "And you?" Gabriella asked, feeling obliged to ask the girl the same question. She wanted to know that she wasn't about to get ambushed.

message 9: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabby nodded slowly and walked over to Shade, untying him from the tree stump and tugging on the reins so that he trotted over to her. She watched as the girl made her way across the river, her movements sure and careful as she hopped from rock to rock over the fast flowing waters. Now that the girl was closer Gabby was finally able to take stock of her appearance, the other girl was older than her but by how many years Gabriella couldn't be sure. She was a bit taller than Gabby, slender but not sickly looking at all. Gabby gripped Shade's reins and pulled at the strap of her rucksack with her free hand, "I've been heading north, following the line of the sun." She pointed to where the sun was hanging low on the horizon. "I was going to carry on in that direction but maybe setting up camp here for the night would be a good idea?" She suggested, now that she had someone to swap night watches with it made sense to try and get some sleep.

message 10: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabriella pushed her hair away from her face and absently pet the horses side as she nodded in agreement to the other girl. "We could head up river, get higher up and make camp there. That'll probably be safer." She shrugged, dropping her hand from Shade and looking off up the river. Gabby contemplated the girls question and tried adding the days up in her head since she'd left the other quarantine zone. "About a week and half or so." She replied quietly, loosing her bag from her shoulders and slinging it over Shade's saddle, using the buckles to tie it in place. Gabby unzipped one of the pockets from the saddle bag and pulled out a scrap of paper, an old yellowing map with a few lines drawn over it already. She held it up against the saddle and placed her finger tip on a point on the map. "We're about here- if I'm right that is? But it should be another days journey to reach the city." Gabby murmured, "Which is right here." She jabbed a finger at a large blue circle on the paper.

message 11: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabriella replaced the map in the saddle bag and adjusted her rucksack over Shade's back, she took his reins in one hand-gripping them tightly for fear of losing him. Her other hand held the strap of her rifle, still slung over her shoulders where it was easily accessible if need be. Gabby glanced up as Evarinne already started walking up the trail, she nodded eagerly and took a few hasty steps to catch up. "Yeah I'm coming." She called, quickening her pace as Shade walked along beside her and they headed up stream. "So.." Gabby began as she caught up to Evarinne. "Where have you travelled from? Or is it all a blank?" She asked, somewhat curious as to where the other girl had come from.

message 12: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabrielle followed the other girl, listening with mild curiosity to the story that Evarinne was telling. It was intriguing to say the least, how someone who seemed so sure of themselves could know so little about what had happened to them. "What's it like there?" Gabby asked before she could stop herself, the prospect of moving to a new place that was free of the infection and had hot showers and ration stations. It was too good to ignore. She chewed her lip and considered Evarinne's question. Gabby didnt really know what her story was or where to even begin. "Everyone has a story, mine's just really long." She replied with a slight smile. "I spent my childhood in San Paulo in Brazil, that was about ten years after this forsaken virus took hold so things weren't too bad but my family wanted to get out of the city. It wasn't healthy even without the infection present. We ended up in a small country safe zone in Alabama, that's where I picked up this guy." She gave Shade an affectionate pat. "But that didnt last long, my brother joined a group of resistance fighters and the place where we were staying was attacked. My father just told me to go, promised he'd meet me in Florida." Gabby shrugged and leaned into Shade as they continued up the hill towards the top of the stream. It was clear what had happened from there, the Florida quarantine zone has fallen prey to the over controls and Gabby was still yet to find her family. "I guess heading to the city is my one hope of finding any of them alive. It's the next spot on the map- well one of the only remaining ones." She muttered pausing to move her hair out of her face. "What about you? Your story a long one?"

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabby listened intently as she clambered over a few rocks that lay in their path, Shade followed effortlessly behind tugging ever so slightly on the reins. "I've started to realise that being alive is all that matter nowadays, luxury doesn't exist for anyone." She murmured, absently tugging at the cord on her coat as she walked. For Gabriella the lack of comforts was normal for her, after weeks of sleeping rough or shacking up in abandoned places the prospect of a bed was too good an opportunity to miss. "Sorry, it sounds like you had it bad." Gabby murmured, regretting asking. It wasn't like her to probe so much and getting someone to open up about something that was painful for them wasn't her usual style. "The city sounds welcoming, you're not the only one." Gabriella replied, following Evarinne's lead to the top of the stream. As they reached the higher point Gabriella raised a hand to her brow, shielding her eyes from the sun as they looked across the horizon. All of a sudden her dark eyes saw the looming shape of a town in the distance. "Evarinne!? Look down there!" She pointed frantically towards the large building shapes that were clear against the back drop of the sun.

message 14: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabby chewed her lip as she reached the top and stood looking over the landscape in the distance, "But the town..." She trailed off and eyed the shapes in the distance. "If we could just make it there, you know what that mean?! A roof, shelter the possibility of food!?" Gabby was entirely new to the area, she had no idea what the town truly contained but the prospect of a hot meal or even a bed to sleep in looked far better than curling up under the trees. She absently tugged on Shade's reins causing the horse to whinny and pull on the leather harness. As much as Gabby liked the idea of remaining here away from civilisation if they could reach the town maybe they'd get directions to the city.

message 15: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabby nodded and gestured to Shade. "Do you want to climb up? We can travel faster on horseback and he can take two easily?" She suggested, untying her rucksack from the saddle and moving it closer to the horses neck so there was room for them to both get on. Gabriella placed her foot in the stirrup and swung her leg over Shade's back, settling into the saddle and gripping the reins tightly in her fingers. "Come on up, he doesn't bite." She grinned, pulling on the reins to keep Shade in place whilst she waited for Evarinne to make a decision.

message 16: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) Gabby nodded and leant forward a little in the saddle to provide Evarinne with enough room, "He used to carry me and my brother, he's capable." She murmured, gently patting Shade's neck before squeezing her heels into his sides and causing the horse to start forward, plunging into the trees towards the town. "Hold on!" Gabby warned, giving Shade a sharp kick so the horse flew into the trees at break neck pace. Gabby knew he'd be fine, it wasn't too far and she'd be sure to climb off of him once they reached the town. He'd had it pretty easy so far anyway. Gabriella ducked low on the saddle, hoping Evarinne would follow her lead as the low hung branches whipped overhead. The town loomed in the distance getting closer by the second.

message 17: by E L L E (new)

E L L E (lacustrine_dreams) It took only ten minutes or so of fast paced riding before the two reached the outskirts of the town. Gabby pulled sharply on the reins and Shade slowed to a gentle walk as Gabby took a deep breath and eyed the dilapidated town in front of them. She chewed her lip, it didn't look promising but then it was better than nothing and shelter was shelter after all. "Come on." Gabby murmured, sliding from the saddle and taking Shade's reins in her hands once again. The ground was comfortable beneath her feet and she hastily untied her rucksack from the saddle bags. "Shall we head in?" She suggested, waiting for Evarinne to dismount the horse so they could head into town.

(Do you want to post in the town thread? Or do you want to post here once more and then move to the town?)
