Heather, you have 3 E choices, 3 #5 and 5 #1 choices. You need to limit the choices to no more than 2 of any letter and no more than 2 of any number.

ETA: I didn't look to see how you might move some of these around, but I suspect you can do it with most of them.

message 23: by Heather (new)

Heather (sarielswish) | 738 comments ok then... i THINK i fixed this. i had to choose a couple of new books, but that's ok with me!

A3 (Europe) - V for Vendetta
A6 (Australia) - On The Beach
B1 (2012) - The Hunger Games and Philosophy: a Critique of Pure Treason
B3 (1696) - Damnation Alley
C2 (144 pages) - Batman: Year One
D4 (female author 40-60)- The Handmaid's Tale
D5 (male author 60+) - The Road
E5 (000-499 non-fiction) - Why Won't God Go Away: Brain Science and the Biology of Belief
E6 (500-999 non-fiction) - Cosmos
F1 (translated from Polish) - Solaris

Elizabeth (Alaska) If V for Vendetta is a graphic novel, it can be used only for E1. I didn't look at the others.

Heather (sarielswish) | 738 comments may i ask why? i'm not trying to be a pain, but that just doesn't follow. it's set in London so it would be A3, the author was under 40 so it would be D1, it was published in 1982 so it would be B2, and at 296 pages, it would be a C4. i'm just a bit confused as to the reasoning for that. and yes, now that i go back, i see that's in the rules. i didn't see it before. i have to change this one and the Batman one as well.

We usually don't allow any graphic novels in the sub-challenge, and books less than 100 pages in none of the tasks. There are small exceptions in this challenge.

message 27: by Heather (new)

Heather (sarielswish) | 738 comments ok, i was just curious. V for Vendetta is larger than a lot of regular novels, so i was a bit stuck. it's almost 300 pages and the batman one is 144. but i'll just find something else for those spots.

message 28: by Liz M (new)

Liz M Heather, relying on the info you provided above (I didn't check author ages, page numbers or publication dates) I think this will work:

A6 (Australia) - On The Beach
B2 (1980) - Cosmos
B3 (1696) - Damnation Alley
C3 - (241 pages)The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath
C4 - (320 pages) The Hunger Games and Philosophy: a Critique of Pure Treason
D4 (female author 40-60)- The Handmaid's Tale
D5 (male author 60+) - The Road
E1 - graphic Novel - V for Vendetta or Batman: Year One
E5 (000-499 non-fiction) - Why Won't God Go Away: Brain Science and the Biology of Belief
F1 (translated from Polish) - Solaris

I'm sorry to be such a pain, but On the Beach has a Lexile of 780 and cannot be used for this sub-challenge.

message 31: by Heather (new)

Heather (sarielswish) | 738 comments i have a question about that, though. On The Beach may have a lexile of 780, but it is not a young adult novel. the rules in bold state *YA books* with a Lexile score less than 800 are not allowed. ONLY young adult. this was written in 1956 for an adult audience. just for reference, quite a few Agatha Christie novels have a lexile of 700, The Running Man by Stephen King has a 740, The Handmaid's Tale, which everyone seems to rave about and i know has been used many times, is a 750, and a good handful of Isaac Asimov's earlier works are under 800. so, would none of those be acceptable either?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Heather wrote: "i have a question about that, though. On The Beach may have a lexile of 780, but it is not a young adult novel. the rules in bold state *YA books* with a Lexile score less than 800 are not allowed...."

B2 (1995) - This Is The Way The World Ends

Elizabeth (Alaska) :-)

I didn't check everything, but you've got the letters/numbers things working and I don't recognize any YA. Hope you enjoy the reading!

message 35: by Bea (new)

Bea I may be missing something here.

I thought that we check the books for this challenge against BPL. Only if the book is labelled as YA at BPL do we have to check the Lexile. Am I wrong?

message 36: by Heather (new)

Heather (sarielswish) | 738 comments if any of that is classified as young adult, *someone* needs to reassess what they consider appropriate for children... >.<

i wasn't aware that they classified it as YA. that was where the confusion came in. i never thought to look it up, because i didn't consider it a YA book.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Ah, I see the source of some of the confusion, and I apologize. In my Post #30 above, referencing On the Beach Lexile 780, I omitted that it is YA with a Lexile of 780. Sometimes, having had the thought, I apparently think I've typed it.

That's just it, Elizabeth. I looked that book up at BPL, and it is not listed as YA. Pretty sure I got the right book...but I do have the old BPL and not the new one. Would that make a difference?

OOPS: Nevermind the above comment. I re-looked and found that, although it is labelled as Fic Shute, it is located in some YA areas. Going back to bed until my head wakes up.
