Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments UPDATE!
* Book Recommendation Fair
* Details for TFG Discussion for ReaderCon

------

Reposting Honey's message here, since it's a better intro message. :D

---

Hello! Wasn't sure where to post this, but this seemed like the best thread. Anyway...

The 3rd Filipino ReaderCon will be on November 9!

Given that, nominations for the Filipino Readers' Choice Awards are also open! Hope you guys can go to the form and nominate your favorite Philippine-published book from 2012.

Also, like last year and the year before that, we're calling for volunteers for the ReaderCon itself and possible judges for the FRCA. If you're interested--and I hope you are--you can go sign-up on this form.

Again, let me thank TFG for supporting the ReaderCon through the years. And we hope you continue to support it this year and the years to come. I remember the first ReaderCon where majority of the volunteers came from this group. The rest of the ReaderCons wouldn't have happened if it weren't for that support you showed. Thank you, thank you!

Oh, and before I forget, let me know if you guys want to sponsor a book discussion again this year. Four slots are up for grabs!:)

---

So this thread will be all about ReaderCon related stuff, and what we will do there as a book club. (Because yes, we have plans!) If you've never been to the ReaderCon, you can read about what happened last year through Angus' quick rave, or my rambly behind-the-scenes post about it. Or you can check out last year's thread to see how we prepared for it. :)

So guys, save the date, okay? NOVEMBER 9, 2013, 3RD FILIPINO READERCON. :D

P.S: Filipino ReaderCon website, @PinoyReaderCon and Filipino ReaderCon on Facebook :)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments So what exactly will TFG do during the ReaderCon?

We don't have a final program or list of activities on the day itself just yet, but here's what we have lined up, as of now:

1. Book Discussion - Went ahead and claimed one of the slots in the discussion. :D Last year, we hosted The Little Prince discussion during the ReaderCon. What will we host this year? And who will moderate it? :D

2. Book Recommendation Fair - This is kind of like a bazaar, but we're not going to sell anything. We will just give away recommendations, blog cards (for members who have blogs and have blog cards) and book club info (bookmarks with our URL, or something).

--

And then here's another idea: what do you guys think of inviting some of the KEOF kids to the ReaderCon? Like maybe 3-5 kids, and Miss Abby/Miss Susan? Just playing with the idea, since we do want to share our love for reading with them and the ReaderCon seems like that event for them to bond with other readers, and experience book discussions all in one go. :) (view spoiler)

--

So far that's it. In case there are more, I'll update this post. :)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Volunteers:

Did you volunteer for the ReaderCon? (As in, did you fill out the form there?) Please say if you did, so we know who to bug in fixing the TFG activities for the ReaderCon.

So let us know if you volunteered for the ReaderCon, or if you just want to volunteer for the TFG activities during the ReaderCon. You'll still be there, anyway, so keri lang. ;) If you want to volunteer for both, then...go.

Oh, btw...(view spoiler)

ReaderCon volunteers:
1. Tina
2. Wilfred
3. Monique
4. Angus
5. Blue

Volunteers for TFG activities during ReaderCon:
1. Ranee
2. Wilfred
3. Angus
4. Zim
5. Tricia

Hi Billy! Do you mean volunteering for the actual ReaderCon or for the TFG activities lang during ReaderCon? (Heh, I hope that's clear :D) If it's the former, please fill out this form. :)

message 7: by Gabriel (new)

Gabriel Gapas (slayerstargab) | 24 comments I'm willing to volunteer for both. :)) I find it fun to be active in such activities, eh.

(And if I have Saturday classes, I can skip it since it would be the first week of the second semester. HAHA ang sama ko)

message 8: by Monique (new)

Monique (attymonique) | 2130 comments Hi cousin! ;) Filled out the form for ReaderCon volunteer already. Am sure lots of members will volunteer for TFG so stick me right there with ReaderCon activities. :)

message 9: by Ranee (new)

Ranee | 1902 comments Hi Billy, hi Monique! Hooray for readercon!

Personally, I like the idea of having a booth, parang may tambayan lang! Hehe

First thing though, we have to think of a book for the discussion. Any suggestions?
For the benefit of our newbies: What we did last year was to choose a book from a past f2f. We eventually decided on Little Prince, our then February F2F book discussion. One factor why we chose this is because we wanted sit in audiences to join in the discussion. (And we reached that goal, nonTFG members did join the discussion). This is the shortcut version, please refer to the old readercon thread in the archives portion for the whole story.

So, are we again choosing a book from our past F2F for this year's Readercon discussion?

message 10: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments I'm all for using a past F2F book for a Readercon discussion. Easier since all of us have read it, plus we have questions na c/o the mod for that book. :)

We can pick a new book din naman, pero medyo dagdag effort. Hehe. We are coming fresh from October F2F nun, so baka mahirapan tayo maghabol. :) Plus, TFG members don't have to attend our discussion. If they're interested in attending the discussion na kasabay natin, okay lang din. We will have non-TFG members present, though, so the discussion will also tell the non-members how we are as a group, and how we do our discussions. :)

Kung personal preference ang tatanungin from our past F2Fs: I pick Pride & Prejudice. Marami na nakabasa nun, and I personally think you can't go wrong with an Austen. :D

message 11: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments I volunteer to both. Pwedeng sa registration ulit, or pwedeng ilipat sa iba. :)

BTW, does anyone want to be a judge for the Filipino Readers' Choice Awards? :)

message 14: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Hello friends! Late reply to this thread. A broadcast mail will go out over the weekend re: Readercon stuff, but in case you missed it (or haven't checked), Angus opened a thread for the Book Reco Fair. We'll use this thread na lang to discuss stuff for the TFG discussion on the ReaderCon. :D

But before that, here's the program for the Readercon:

(view spoiler)

Description of panels and activities are here. :)

message 25: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments TFG DISCUSSION FOR READERCON 2013:

We have decided in one F2F that we will do a rehash of our October 2012 F2F, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. It's popular, a lot of people have read it, and we had an excellent discussion about it last time.

I'm not sure if DC will be able to go, so who's willing to volunteer as moderator(s) for this? It will probably be a crowd of 30, plus it's a 45-minute discussion so it will be a faster one -- daanan nalang natin sa gimmick. Like, I dunno, show clips of The Lizzie Bennett Diaries, have that Darcy call again, and then have a round of questions at the end. :D (I'd go for tea appreciation thing like DC did, kaso medyo magastos yun, so no :D)

So let's throw ideas in here for our discussion. Doesn't have to be too flashy -- the point is the participants of the ReaderCon who aren't a part of a book club will be able to experience how we do a discussion. :)

message 30: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Atienza (katrinaramosatienza) | 4 comments Bilang fangirl to death ako ng Pride & Prejudice, I'd like to help out with the P&P discussion. I've never been to a ReaderCon though so I don't know exactly how this works. Anyhoo just let me know how I can contribute. Wag lang cash. ;-)

Katrina - and another yay! Sure thing, we'd love your help. I'll send you an email/PM soon! :D

message 32: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Hi everyone! Pre-registration for ReaderCon 2013 is now open! Please pre-register so you won't have a hard time to go in line on the day itself. :D

message 33: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Dear friends, so sorry if this thread has been silent. A lot has been going on behind the scenes, which we shall share soon (like maybe tomorrow).

But a little commercial/request/help: We're planning to give away some candies during the Book Recommendation Fair at our booth. We would like to request/ask for the following:

1. Someone who can lend a nice candy bowl (one should be okay) for use during the fair.

2. Candy pledges. We already have a pledge from Aaron (1 bag) and Monique (1 bag of bite-sized chocolates). Looking for about three more pledges just to make sure we have enough, and it doesn't have to be expensive candies. :D (And kung may matira naman, tayo tayo rin kakain nun)

--

We won't call for a uniform shirt color, but if you have a TFG ID from the Outreach event, please bring it and wear it there! (Especially sa book discussion, if you're attending P&P. Because if you feel like attending the other book clubs' discussion, it's really okay. Except if you're one of the people in charge of the P&P discussion :D) If you don't have an ID/Lan yard yet...hold your horses, will get back to you on this. I'm not sure how many of those we have left. :D

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments IMPORTANT NEWS!

After keeping track of weather news and current conditions here in the Metro and in nearby areas, we've decided to postpone the Filipino ReaderCon 2013 to December 7. Venue will still be at the Rizal Library. Although we would've loved to keep things on track, we believe it's in everyone's best interests that we stay at home on Saturday, Nov. 9, and batten down our hatches, literally and figuratively.

On the bright side, December 7 will give us more time to prepare the things we have to prepare or polish the things we already have.

We hope to see you all on Dec. 7, but in the meantime, we will be keeping all our marketing activities, online and off, active to build towards the new date. And we will stay in touch with each group regarding the new arrangements.

We apologize for this unfortunate turn of events, but again, thank you for supporting the Filipino ReaderCon. We hope we all stay safe against the storm.

--

Stay safe and dry everyone! :) Hope December 7 is still free for you :)

message 43: by Meliza (new)

Meliza (mecawish) | 720 comments Tina. I'm just going to eat tomorrow the whole bag of candies that I bought. Hehe.

Hope I could still come on the 7th of December. That day is our year-end party.

message 44: by Meliza (new)

Meliza (mecawish) | 720 comments I believe it's 150Php. It's the registration fee. :)

message 45: by Kayla (new)

Kayla De Leon (kayladeleon) I have a copy of Anna and the French Kiss but it's the new cover one, not the one with the girl. I'm still not sure if I'm going but if I am, I'll bring it na lang. :)

message 46: by Veronica (new)

Veronica | 734 comments Hi guys!

Someone gave me a book last Saturday, The Red House Mystery by A.A. Milne. I seem to have misplaced it. I must've put it in someone else's bag, haha. :)

If you find it, can you please bring it on the Christmas party?

Thanks! :)

message 47: by Tina (last edited Dec 09, 2013 05:23AM) (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Before my computer's batteries run out (no power at home, huhu!), the thank you's for last Saturday!

* Thanks to Aaron and Ranee for taking care of TFG, and for letting me bug them always for all the stuff that we needed to do.
* Thanks to Monique, Angus and Alexa for being the next few people I bugged for things that we needed to do for the ReaderCon.
* * Thanks to Angus who fixed the Book Reco Fair lists for us (in his usual super-organized way). Also super thanks to all the people who designed the posters (Aenna, Rhena, Alexa, Louize, Aaron), and everyone who helped set up the booth manned the booth and talked to everyone who came by.
* Ranee, Alexa and Angus for taking care of the discussion, and for being game and making adlibs especially when our presentation won't load.
* And of course, one big THANKS to everyone who went to the Filipino ReaderCon last Saturday.

I apologize if I wasn't able to hang out with everyone as much because I was running around, but you guys were my comfort in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of the day. Thank you for all your support! Next year ulit, ha? :D (Because because because! haha)

I love you, TFG. :) See you all at the Christmas party. <3
