message 1: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I vote for fantasy. YA fantasy is light and fun (for the most part), and is perfect for a summer day. :)

message 2: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) ...would it surprise you if I second what Becky says? :)

message 3: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) :D

message 4: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I'll third that!

message 5: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) :)

message 6: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) *trendsetter* ;)

message 7: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) *nominate against us and die a long bookless death*

message 8: by Luann (last edited May 16, 2009 07:20PM) (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments If Neil Gaiman is coming in June (or whichever month he comes), we could pick one of his 10 favorites to read. Allison posted them here. So I guess I'm suggesting our theme that month could be Neil Gaiman's favorites.

Edit: AND if we do choose that, I'd like to nominate Archer's Goon. It's a Diana Wynne Jones I haven't read yet, but would love to!

message 9: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I'm actually ordering Archer's Goon and Lud in the Mist right now based on his recs, so I definitely like her idea!

message 10: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Allison, you should nominate Lud in the Mist for the Fantasy Book Club read too. :)

message 11: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) k I'll go do it

message 12: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yay!

message 13: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) its done, go read the summary! It sounds so cool.

message 14: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) technicalities :P

message 15: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I know... The nomination is for another group. :)

message 16: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments Goof. :)

message 17: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 82 comments LOL couldnt Neil Gaimen's favorite books be consdiered a catagorty for nomination?

message 18: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) well they aren't really YA

message 19: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments Archer's Goon is. :)

message 20: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I dunno if Lud is, but I think that is probably all.

message 21: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I don't remember anything else on them now though :P so maybe I'm wrong.

message 22: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) I say we get adventuresome and pick NG favorite books.

message 23: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) But this is a YA group. I would be willing to go with Neil's favorite YA books, but I don't think that we should start mixing adult books in like that really. We have an "Grown-Up Books for Young Adults" but those appeal to young adults too, not just adults.

message 24: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) yeah, I think if we decided to read a book for NG we'd pretty much have to all agree on Archer's Goon right?

(which is absolutely fine with me, I love DWJ!)

message 25: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) I'm sorry. I really don't know that much about NG. I thought he was YA, or at least partly YA. In that case, I vote for fantasy.

message 26: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) No need to apologize Randi! Gaiman does write both adult and YA, but we were talking about his 10 favorite books, which are mostly adult books, so they wouldn't do... :)

message 27: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) I'll vote for fantasy (and I wouldn't mind reading Archer's Goon) but I vote for Contemporary/Summer theme for the other one. I for one have a very busy June and I wouldn't mind reading a light book about people on the beach.

message 28: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Well... someone could always nominate one of those titles yep yep.. when we get to nominating titles.

message 29: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty How about Historical? I've come across many good YA fiction for Historical recently.

message 30: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (katrinasreads) Fantasy is good with me. One month we could do YA books that you feel you should have read - like Z for Zacariah (its been sat on a bookshelf for years

message 31: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) vsmpires
or not sure how to put this down to a caterogy

maybe friendship, but how about more specfic like last summer of high school friends before moving on to college and adult life?

message 32: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I like the Neil's favorites idea, even tho there aren't many YA's. BECAUSE if we don't pick one of his favorite YA's, we can ALWAYS pick one of the books he's written, from which there are plenty to choose.

LOVE that idea Luann!

message 33: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments It's ok with me! :-)

message 34: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I'd be okay with a grown-up book and a YA book.

message 35: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 623 comments I'm okay with it as well.

message 36: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Sounds good, Fiona!

message 37: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments So.. three books? :)

You know (just to add fuel to the fire), on Chicks on Lit we have 2 books of the month, but then if some people don't care for those books they pick their own and start their own topic on them (or if it's a "chunky" book they'll let it run for over a month). Since NG is willing to chat with us this coming month perhaps there should be a special side book(s) of the month just for that.
I personally would vote for historical, but really it doesn't matter to me, I'm sure there will be at least 1 good book to chose from.

message 39: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty Fiona wrote: "No no just too one YA book of any kind and one themed book.

But will that theme be fantasy, historical or NG top ten?"

Sorry to look dumb Fiona, but what is NG?

message 40: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) NG=Neil Gaiman

message 41: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (katrinasreads) good with me, i love Neil Gaiman so will be interesting to see his favs

Samantha McNulty Fiona wrote: "Great. Well so we have nominations for

YA Fantasy
Historical
And NG Top Ten

Is there any point in having a poll?

I like polls :)

Thanks Allison :D

*hugs* Thanks Fiona! I love polls. They get me all excited!!

Edit: I voted

message 45: by Susan (new)

Susan (mrsfun) | 89 comments I'll second Historical this month.

While I'm excited to 'meet' NG and I'm sure will be enticed to read further things from him (including his recommendations), I am stoked about reading a wider selection of YA.

I'd also like to recommend (at some point) trying to read one Award book per month (Newbery, etc.)

I love that Susan! I'm such a sucker for award books.

message 48: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) Am I the only one who shies away from the Newbery list? (Probably.)

message 49: by Jamie (new)

Jamie In general, I've had good luck with the Newbery list. I guess I haven't chosen books simply because they have received awards, but I have been pleasantly surprised by most of the award-winning books I've read.

message 50: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) I think it reminds me too much of being in school. I always hated being told what to read. Wasn't it enough that I read incessantly? I resented having to waste time reading books I didn't like when I had tons of books I actually wanted to read. For a long time I was really against classics, too, for that same reason. Obviously I have read and liked both classics and award-winners, but I still cringe when someone tells me I should read either.
