The struggle knows not the logic of morals.
This is my Baghdad story.
Not mine, specifically, but an ode to a city I spent so much time in. The story is, of course, inspired by my time there. I've written books about US soldiers and their struggles with the war. But I wanted to write a book that would best encapsulate the on the ground situation in Baghdad, and thus the insurgency that was raging through the nation (and city) at the time.
Like all insurgencies, Iraq's was different from neighborhood to neighborhood (and more so in different parts of the country), so to say any picture of so complex a situation is complete would be foolish (or it would require too much time). So I focused on a small part of it, and tried to show the motivations for all parties in such tough times.
I squeezed myself dry trying to get inside the head of the characters and making this story come alive.
I made sure, like my view of the situation and most things, that no moral judgement was made on my part. These are simply people trying to do what they feel is best. As such, the nicest doesn't always come out on top. As a few readers have told me, this novel helps to give a good feeling for how even the current (2013) situation in Iraq has come about.
When one sees violence (especially things like car bombs etc) it's easy to assign it with the word senseless. But such labels don't help, and though I'd never say violence is necessary, it is helpful to dig deeper and find why such violence is happening (anywhere, for that matter).

I hope you found this interesting/informative.
