At the start of the 'Elenium', I always preferred the 'Will and the Word' to Sephrenia wiggling her fingers and releasing the spell but throughout the series and then the 'Tamuli' it grew on. Can't choose between them now.
Compared to the Harry Potter's system I think “The Will and the Word” is more sophisticated. In the Harry Potter books is a very cliché wizard: wand, hat, robes and to wrap it up, stuck in the Middle Ages. Although The Belgariad is in the Middle Ages, it¡s everywhere. In Harry Potter it's just the wizards that's stuck. They even have old words for spells and wards, and owls, and so on. David Eddings was more original with The Belgariad then J. K. Rowling was with the cliché wizards.
