Betty One of my biggest pet peeves is to read a great book and then find out that it’s being made into a movie and then the movie doesn’t really follow the book (i.e. leaving out characters or worse morphing several characters into one). Drives me absolutely nuts… am I the only one this happens to? The only exception to this “rule” has been with Something Borrowed… I read the book, really liked… if not somewhat annoyed with Rachel’s “voice” and totally OVER Darcy’s personality, but all in all it was a very good read. Then I saw the movie and LOVED it! The movie did what most all movies do to books, which are change a lot of things, drop character, morph characters… etc., but I didn’t care! The changes that were made were great and kind of needed. My only problem now is how are they going to move things into a sequel? Because I want a sequel. Your thoughts...

Kate Diffley I always try to read the book before seeing the movie.

Tessa I agree with Kate, I prefer to read the book first if at all possible since the movie rarely touches upon every moment of the actual story told within the book. I read this book about a year ago and then finally caved and watched the film the night the other night...back to back! It was actually that good! Rarely does this happen either. You'll notice, if you look real carefully, that in one scene, where Rachel and Ethan are sitting on the bench taking in the park in the last hour of the lovie...you'll see that the woman in pink sitting next to them with book in her hand is actually Emily Giffin herself! LOL Nice touch.
I think that they chose wisely on whoportrayed the characters. Kate Hudson as Dacry and Ginnfer Goodwin as Rachel played out nicely. I liked that while watching, nothing was left out at anytime. The story played right along as it did in the book, no scenes left untouched.
I would love to see a sequel to this story, however, if it doesn't happen I won't be upset b/c the story was really complete as it is.
I usually don't watch the romance, cutesy movies like these, but I had read the book and thought why not give it go finally and I' reallt glad that I did. Just as I did while reading the book, I wanted to smack Darcy a few times for her complete self-involved oblivion that she walked in. I wouldn't have been as nice and patient with her as rachel was in the end especially when she mentions about Rachel being jealous of her since they young and getting into Notre Dame. Whatever, Darcy.

Marren I saw the movie first, then I walked in a bookstore, turned around and the book was staring at me. I liked both the book and the novel. Every time I see the girl who plays Darcy in the movie, she is just so annoying.

Tessa if I remembered correctly, there is a sequel: Something Blue.

That's always the sign of a good book/movie when you believe the character... and I so wanted to smack Darcy too!!! They did a great job with the movie. I'm interested in seeing if they do Something Blue... especially after that teaser in the credits.

Isbes83 i would say books is better than movie most of the time! the description in books is most of the time better and it is not limited to the what we have in real world or acting!

Kristin (thisbookthatwine) Marren is correct. There is a sequel : Something Blue. I loved it, but it was hard to go from Rachel being the main character to Darcy being the main charcter.

I would love, love, love to see this be made into a movie. But they NEED to bring back Kate Hudson, whom I believed NAILED it as Darcy. It's my pet peeve when you have movie sequels with different actors playing the characters.

Majka I loved the book and also watched a film, both were really great..and the sequel was really great too...was so surprised how Darcy changed....

Daniella I have to admit, i did watch the film before even hearing about the book. Before i even read the book, i really enjoyed the film, as a chick flick it really lived up to its potential. However i happen to stumble across the book in a book store and thought i would give it a go. Romance novels are not my favourite of genres of book, however i felt the film spoilt the book. The book included so much more detail, and i felt the film left out so much that the book had included.

i recommend as a read, however read the book before seeing the film you may just enjoy the book a lot more than i did.

Enjoy!

Jane Kincaid I too have to admit. I watched the movie first, then only reading the book. And I find that I love the movie more than the book.

Mara Pemberton There is a sequel---SOMETHING BLUE--Darcy runs away to England after she finds out she's pregnant.

Jamie I have to go against the grain, I did not like the movie portrayal. I did not like the actor chosen for Dex or Marcus. I just was not able to get into the movie, LOVED the books though.

Krista I agree, I thought this movie was just as good or maybe even better than the book.

Mackenzy Hughes I totally agree with you. It can drive you nuts if you ever read a really good book and then they go and make a movie and it totally changes everything about it and just makes you miserable and not focus on the movie cause your freaking out what it dosent or does have in it

Katie Jamie you aren't the only one, I didn't like some of the characters chosen in the movie. I didn't like Dex either but I did like Marcus. Rachel also got on my nerves, I just pictured her a lot different and her voice was a bit much at times.
I did love Kate Hudson as Darcy, she nailed it. She really made her character believable and I really did want to slap her too! I wanted to slap Rachel too but it was cause she was getting on my nerves lol
I love the book much more than the movie but I did enjoy the movie a lot, it's still one of my 'go-to' movies that I watch over and over again. I hope they do "Something Blue" I've been waiting for it to come out since I saw the teaser in the credits. But it needs to be the same actors. Even the ones that I didn't care for, it still should be the same ones. If not it just ruins the film for me.

Heralynn Baloloy Nothing beats the book, that's a given. For me, the film wasnt so bad either except for Rachel and Marcus's actors. Even if the actress is pretty and all, i felt like she looks too old to be Rachel , so there. Ethan is so adorable in the film.

Nichole I read this book when I heard the movie was about to come out. I will always try my hardest to read a book before seeing the movie, otherwise, I can't enjoy the book at all. While rare, I did like the movie as much as the book. Probably because the choice of cast was good and all the characters were likeable.

Not sure about a Something Blue movie... revolving around a character like Darcy would make most of us want to blow our brains out, even if the ending is a good one. But hey, it's not different than many of the young adult ladies in the World right now, and like the book says, almost all of us have that one friend that is a Darcy.

Then you will have to read SOMETHING IN BLUE to find out what happens with Darcy.

I've already read Something Blue. That's why I said the ending is good... cause Darcy changes. But you still have to deal with her the first 3/4 of it and to see that on film might be too much.

Amee I loved the books, but hated the movie. I know the main characters in the first five books are all related somehow to a character in a previous book. I haven't read Where We Belong to see if it continues along the same line. I like that because you get a feeling of what happened to those characters afterwords. I look forward to reading Where We Belong and The Only One when it comes out in May.

Simina I usually like the book and hate the movie, but there are a few exceptions where the movie actually was a bit better than the book. Like The Last of the Mohicans. They did change the book almost entirely but the result was spectacular. I also agree with the big screen ending for My Sister's Keeper and The Mist... That's about it. The rest, I'm always complaining how they are ruining perfectly good stories for the larger cinema audience.

Jamie I saw the movie first then bought the book. I couldn't read the book because I knew what was supposed to happen according to the movie. If things didn't pan out that way I was confused. I had to wait a year after watching the movie to reading the book. Now I'm reading the book and it's much easier to read it without trying to figure out if I missed a part or thinking about what is about to happen.

Ana I had the worst experience with this book. I had seen the movie a couple months before reading the book but weirdly enough, I didn't realize until halfway into the book that the story was horribly familiar.

Anyways, I barely tolerated the book. Darcy was 1000% more annoying in the book than she was in the movie and IMO, the movie was way better. Obviously it wasn't cinematic excellence but still, compared to the books....No comparison.

Melody Mongeon i think part of the reason the movie seemed better is the actual actresses were more likable than the characters. the characters flaws were pretty glaring and i think if you already liked the actresses it softened you to the characters flaws. some how for me seeing kate hudson playing darcy was easier to forgive than the one my imagination conjured from the book. and i prefer her in her less narcissistic roles.

Roberta Wilson I didn't like the way the film ended because Rachel had an opportunity to tell Darcy how she really felt. However, I think she was weak in just letting Darcy have her way. She let Darcy take Dex away from her because she presumed he would like her better.
Darcy was crass, opportunistic, and an out of control sex kitten. Dex saw something in her that had nothing to do with being loud, presumptuous, and a go getter. She lost sight of it and waited until it was almost too late, to grab him back. Well, she got him back, but if you want something, don't let it get away. Have courage! If you want something, grab it.
If anything, Dex came between them, because Rachel decided she didn't want him, and when Darcy decided she did, Rachel finally realized she did want him in the first place.

Marianne Brodman I've never read the book. Judging by the reviews, I should keep it that way & preserve the good feeling about the movie.
