I am finally on vacation! But before diving into my books, there was my daughter's birthday to celebrate (it was a lovely day). Now I am reading, as usual, too many books! Some of them: The Interestings (liking so far) by Meg Wolitzer; Taipei by Tao Lin (not sure yet how I feel); Is He Popenjoy? by Anthony Trollope (loving loving loving it); The Southwest: New Mexico and Arizona by Jake Page (bought for the pictures which are gorgeous and the author, Jake Page, whose Santa Fe mysteries I love); Life A User's Manual by Georges Perec (not sure yet); Agatha Raisin and the Haunted House by M. C. Beaton (great fun, as usual); Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (loved the opening with the female narrator's voice, the male not so much so far); and just starting The Infatuations, the just-released work of Javier Marías (too soon to tell, but I'm hoping for love). Also debating whether to buy another Enrique Vila-Matas since I love all his work that I've read so far (recently finished Never Any End to Paris which I loved). I've spend a lot lately (as you can tell!) and I may hold back a bit-also, I want to save some since I'm running out of his work to read!).
well, once I have finished laughing at Ellies phenomenal list,I can confess that I've only read one of those titles, the users manual, which I thought quite good.Javier MaríasI have been wanting to read and I have enjoyed Meg W...but never heard of any of the others (well I have heard of Trollope but only rumors)
I am fully engaged with Makers which I have been lugging around with me for almost a week. I have a couple of Meivilles I finally got from the library, which I plan to read soon, and I am still working with Being of Power
Then there is the other Cortazar biography....
and what is Traveller reading?
Going through a bit of a rough patch, I decided not to postpone for another minute the delicious Autonauts of the Cosmoroute and just taking the book out and hugging it was a comfort.I haven't even entered two of the other books I have been reading, both begun when I was on silent retreat, one finished and returned to the library, and one which I will enter in a minute. Both have to do with borderline personality disorders, difficult and intense reading, and the Cortazar comes as a breath of fresh air."The reader will have discerned by now that we're crazy" he cheerfully admits. For him and his companion, this gives them poetic liscense to create their own itineraries.
For me,a bit of a pall hangs over the adventure, the shadow cast by my learning that JC's companion, Carol Dunlop, died later that year, and JC himself died a couple of years later. I am disappointed that both the biographies of JC that I am currently studying merely skim over his life events. I AM READY for a detailed bio
