One of my first thoughts while reading this book was why RZ decided to continue with the series. Why didn't he just end it at the Corwin Cycle? If anyone is thinking the same thing, I just have to say it will all make sense after reading through the rest. :)
I might be in minority, but I really like Merlin books. They are weaker than Corvin series, but good books nonetheless.
What is so bad about them?

I actually can't make up my mind which series is better. I like the Merlin Cycle because there's so much more we can about Amber, the Courts, and the people in them. It gives the whole series a whole lot more sense. Perhaps the Corwin Cycle might be better but for me the Merlin Cycle is not as bad as others say it is.
I like the Merlin books because of my childhood fascination with King Arthur and of course.....Merlin.
Maybe everyone got hooked on Corwin.

I am ashamed admit, but the first time I read the book it took me a while to figure out the identity of the narrator (Merlin). Did anybody else have this problem, or was it just me?
A nice beginning to Merlin's story. Mystery and conflict set up. If I were reading this without being able to read the next, I might be disappointed.
The mystery part in Merlin cycle is much more complicated then Corwin's one.

All new characters, except Merlin of course.
A quick read ...interesting, but I do like Corwin's adventures better.
