What's your favorite film?

What have you seen recently? Would you recommend it?

Do you watch foreign films? If so, do you prefer subtitles or dubbing?

The last film I watched was the Silver Linings Playbook, if you watched and loved the book you might like the movie but there are quite a few changes that have been made to the movie.

I haven't watched foreign films in a while but I think I would prefer subtitles over dubbing, as I am partially deaf I have gotten into a habit of watching t.v with subtitles although I have to say, it really improved my spelling a lot.

Musicals, from Fred and Ginger, Gene Kelly to Hair, Fame...
But also our old dear musicarelli!!!

Another similarity!! I like all sorts of musicals, but Fred & Ginger occupy a special place in my heart (plus I love Edward Everett Horton and Eric Blore who play secondary roles in so many of their movies!). For me, Gene Kelly never measured up to Fred although his Singing in the Rain is one of my top 5 musicals of all time.

I love classic films especially the screwball comedies of the 30s. However, I also like a lot of the contemporary action and sci fi/fantasy films such as Avatar - special effects are sooooo much better now than they were 50 years ago!

And my guilty pleasure is Hallmark movies on TV...

message 5: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments Films are my another passion. I have watched movies from all over the world. And I always prefer sub-titles to watch the other language films. Recently I had watched few Japanese and Korean films. To be precise I had watched the Vengeance Trilogy of the Korean director Park Chan-Wook.

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 266 comments I like most films, and I have an unlimited Cineworld card so I see a lot of new films too. I actually review them for a website as well. I won't go into a list of my favourites because it would take far too long. As for foreign films I much prefer subtitles, even for animated ones.

I was going to go for that but the only chance I would get to use it is in Chester but apparently they are closing that now. I'm a bit annoyed as I would usually go a couple of times a months. And they say they are worried about piracy.

I'd seen Hotel Transylvania with my flatmate, I think we were the oldest (not including the parents) there but we loved it!

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I have so many favourite films. It varies to be honest - I get obsessed with some films and have to watch them every night before I sleep. My all-time favourite is probably Trainspotting.

I recently saw Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 and would highly recommend both!

I don't really watch a lot of foreign films because I don't really like subtitles. The only ones I've seen that I can remember are Amelie, Pan's Labyrinth and some French horror that I can't remember the name of.

I think the DVD is out now, it's the only movie I have seen in the last year that I would consider buying.

Haha get out of my head!!

I don't bother with dvds anymore, I actually sold a lot of mine last year. I have so many recorded on Virgin and I go to the cinema a lot so I rarely get to watch the dvds I do own.

I have been wondering that for a couple of years now!

I don't watch a lot of foreign films but I do have a strong preference for subtitles. I hate it when the mouth movements don't match the sound! I have seen Amelie, which I liked but once again mostly I have seen classics (which I can watch from the comfort of my living room on cable :P).

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I always find it incredible hard to pick a favourite film as I have different films for different moods. Monsters Inc is my favourite relaxing, feel good film. I love all of the Harry Potter films to watch when I'm tired or not feeling well. I also love superhero films in particular the Avengers. I don't have very grown-up or sophisticated taste in films.

The most recent film I watched was Monsters University which personally I really enjoyed. Not as good as the 1st film but still excellent

I do enjoy foreign language films but I haven't watched many. I think subtitles are much better than dubbing. There is less chance of me falling asleep in a film if I have to read it!

message 21: by Alannah (new)

Alannah Clarke (alannahclarke) | 15052 comments Mod
Finally saw Monsters University, not as good as the first film because I loved the relationship between Sully and Boo but I can see why my brother didn't like it as much. It almost felt like it was aimed at the people who were young enough when the first movie came out and would be old enough that they are finishing high school or starting university.

message 22: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Heather wrote: ". I don't have very grown-up or sophisticated taste in films..."

Despite the fact that I am now on the downward slope of middle aged heading towards old, I still love children's movies especially the animated ones. Loved Monsters, Inc., Cars, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, etc.

I view it as being young at heart rather than unsophisticated :P

message 23: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 17, 2013 11:31AM) (new)

@Robert - Haha!!

@Heather - I don't have a grown-up taste in films either - I'm a big Disney freak. I love watching Harry Potter when I'm feeling a bit poorly too.

@Alannah - I did miss Boo I have to say!

@Chimney - Frankenweenie is awesome! In fact, most of Tim Burton's movies are. Animal movies get me too. I always cry when something happens to an animal but not when something happens to children, babies or adults, unless they are my fave character haha.

I think I read the book first then watched the film a couple of months. The book left me with so many questions that the film was able to answer. To be honest I don't think any book/film has done that for me.

Just finished The Great Gatsby after getting it on DVD, I thought the imagery was spot on everything from the houses to that big billboard of the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg. However I wonder if it's just me but the ending made it (view spoiler)

Yeah Percy Jackson is probably where I know him but I haven't seen any of the movies or read the books.

I thought the same about Emma Watson, it took me a while to shake the Hermoine off when Sam was talking about how she was failing in school, probably because Emma was apparently a great student too. My friend who studies at Oxford Brookes had seen her around Oxford when she was studying at Oxford University. My housemate had also met Emma in a bookstore with her brother and they were talking and laughing at the fact that my housemate was drooling over a bookmark with her face and he didn't realise the person was standing behind him.

It is! I've heard people say it focuses too much on the love story between Gatsby and Daisy but I thought that was quite important as Daisy was probably the only real reason for his downfall. The way they did it to make it look like Nick was looking back was good, I don't want to give it away until you see the movie.

I really liked the film, I'm going to buy the DVD when it comes out too, so I can watch it again. The only problem was Tobey Macguire, I kept thinking of him as Spiderman! Maybe they could have chosen someone less well known for the role of Nick..?

I didn't seem to have that problem, maybe because I haven't watched Superman in years. I thought Leo was the perfect choice as I always pictured him as Gastby when I was reading the book for the first time. However my favourite Nick will always be Sam Waterston in the 1974 version.

Yeah, there were some facial expressions that were identical to ones he did as Spider-Man, and given I've seen the Spider-Man films loads of times it made me smirk.

I'm off to see a preview screening of About Time tonight.

I do the same :-) Do you have a 'ritual' of films that you watch at Xmas time? I always watch 'The Grinch' on Xmas Eve day (or evening if I have been working) and I watch 'The Polar Express' on Xmas Eve night before I go to sleep haha :-) Others like Home Alone, TNBC, The Santa Clause etc get watched in the week leading up to it.

I do, Nightmare before Christmas is always the first one I watch, then the week before I would start watching Santa Clause, The Grinch and the first two Home Alones. Then on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day for some reason I watch the Harry Potters.

message 45: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 266 comments Platoon is awesome!

As for Christmas movies my three main ones are Hook, Elf and Love, Actually.

I went to see About Time. It was okay, it's not a romcom like it's been marketed as. Pretty much everything in the trailer is from the first act.

message 46: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I like Elf as a silly Xmas movie but once again my choices are old school - It's a Wonderful Life, A Miracle on 34th Street, etc. Although I do watch Home Alone and The Grinch pretty much every year!

Emily Verona (emilyrv) I definitely enjoyed What Maisie Knew and This is the End. Great films.

message 50: by Charbel (new)

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments One of my favourite Christmas films is A Christmas Carol. The animated one isn't bad, but I usually go for the classic versions. I don't enjoy the movies that take the story and give it a modern twist, I like it when they stay true to the book.
