Am I the only one who finds it weird when Kit casually said that the volunteers use to meet in 'opium dens'

On page 27 of the Penultimate Peril Kit starts to list safe houses where volunteers use to meet and one of those places was an opium den....what?

Your opinions on this please. Let me know that I'm not crazy.

I under stand why they would meet there. An opium den was an establishment where opium was sold and smoked.

When I first read this, I thought that was kinda weird, too. But knowing Lemony Snicket, it's probably some kind of literary reference - he might have been thinking about Sherlock Holmes or something like that.

I had always thought that VFD were crooks. I also noticed that, and now I’m convinced they have ties to drug running. This just proves my theory that they are the villains.
