What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read a book this summer (2013) that was children's lit or YA about a boy who had been raised by his grandmother on what used to be a commune. He was kept largely separated from the outside world. She is injured and he goes into foster care and must attend public school for the first time. He is, as a joke played on him by others, chosen as the class president of his middle school. He takes the job seriously and changes the lives of other students. Anyone know the title of this book?

It doesn't look like we're going to hear from Laura again, is there one more person who read "Schooled" and wants to bet their life this was Laura's book? Then we'll call this solved.
