A nice start - are these books on a particular time period of India or reflective to the first part of the reading?
They are a mix of things that are mentioned in the book as well as those that give the reader a better understanding of India.

John Keay"Good catch, Martin. Thanks.
Interesting that the focus of Below the Peacock Fan is on ladies of the Raj, as is the middle two volumes of Scott's quartet. Even in the Raj Quartet's first and fourth volumes the women play leading roles. Also, the essay Christopher Hitchens (posted elsewhere here) wrote about the central role women play in Scott's quartet and is well worth reading although please note it is in the spoiler thread for good reason.
And, while I'm riffing on Brit women in India, the women of Passage to India play major roles as well. Britania may have ruled the waves, but its women ruled Britania - and as someone whose mil was from Brum - I get it.

Although this classic book is historical fiction, it paints such a haunting picture of Raj India that it belongs in this glossary.

I think Kasim (old Kasim) really started to doubt the motivations of the leaders who wanted to separate from India. I think he was suspect of Jinnah and his motivations.

To everyone who loved reading the Raj Quartet, you'll appreciate this novel. It's set in current times in England, but the Raj and the Partition are background:

Andrea, we had the discussions for the entire quartet at the HBC plus one and I enjoyed reading and discussing all of the books.
The discussions are still housed in this folder. If you have not read them, I highly recommend doing so. Kressel was actually part of the group that was involved with these discussions.
