Haruki Murakami's "Underground" is about the Aum Shinrikyo subway gassing that happened in 1995.

All books that I've read from Murakami were settled in Japan. And I read:Dance, Dance, Dance
South of the Border, West of the Sun
After Dark
My personal favorite is Natsume Sōseki's Kokoro.I have heard no shortage of good things about Murakami, and I am looking forward to picking up The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle or Kafka on the Shore in particular.
The Temple of Dawn (The Sea of Fertility: Book 3) by Yukio Mishima. The wind-up bird chronicle is also v. good.
Historical fiction Shōgun and Gai-Jin,James Clavell both are excellent. I also enjoyed Cloud of Sparrows, which was a lot 'lighter' but a good quick read.Takashi Matsuoka
