If you have a personality or nationality for a character and you can't think of a name for them, I like to use this website for it-http://www.meaning-of-names.com You can click the trait, you can go to another page on the site and look for the country their from and name them local names. I keep a page document that has names and where their from and stuff for future reference. The same for the ones I've already used so I don't use them again.
I'm not a published author yet, but I plan to be when I complete one of my novels. One thing I've noticed with writing is that I tend to try to map out my ideas ahead of time. And sure, it's good to have an outline, but to not make it concrete. I seem to do better with words when I kind of...wing it in certain areas and chapters. Characters aren't known for staying where they are; they're like kids. Sometimes, it would be efficient to tie them to leashes and chastise them when they don't stay in their designated corners, but characters will be characters.
So yeah, I just found that that helps a bit with me, personally; to not try and figure everything out all at once. The worst that can happen is a few sheets of ideas are discarded, but it is totally worth the risk.
Plus, it's fun to see where the rebellious residents of your mind take you.
Nice advice Emily and TJ!For the future, GROUP MEMBERS... PLEASE MAKE A NEW TOPC IN THE "GIVE ADVICE" FOLDER WHEN YOU GIVE ADVICE. <\b>
Well for me I like to keep track of when new ideas hit me so I keep a notebook or table with me or next to my bed so when an idea hits I can write it down. I also use it to help me when I write so I can keep things in line for what information I may need to do more research on to help make it better. That way if I don't use it in one book I may want to use it in another.
