Modern Good Reads discussion

I recently saw a blog post about the diversity break down in children's books. What is your take on this?

As a retired teacher, I believe promoting diversity through books is critical in classrooms and libraries everywhere (globally). This helps children see beyond their own small world, recognize how much we all have in common and make positive connections to our global family. It's up to us (parents, educators, librarians to make sure these books are not only available, but read to and discussed with our kids.

Can I get suggestions of books with diversity for my classroom, grades 5-8? Picture books are still loved even by middle schoolers.

I love Dr. Seuss!
For example:
The Sneeches
How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Older kids look at them in a brand new way
Enjoying the Good Doctors rhymes on display
About diversity they'll have lots to say.

You're right on target. Picture books give older kids a model for their own writing and open up discussion on a myriad of timely topics.
