Yeah but what about middle-grade age kids? Is it appropriate for them to be reading about people getting beheaded in books like Eragon?

The thing is, everybody has different needs. It's up to the parents, simple as that. For example, my mother has always vbeen open to me about how the world works, both with violence and in sexual matters. So I've been reading whatever since I was about twelve. (Harry Potter when I was nine, and some of that is hardly appropriate). But for someone who has been very protected, it's a different matter. People know themselves what they need, or the parents will most likely regulate it. It's all about exposion.(Sorry for any writing/spelling mistakes, I'm at school and on my phone)
i dont think that it's that big of a deal. I mean i can't think about any of the books that i like without at least a small bit of violence. In my opinion it all depends on the individual
I'm 12 and I don't mind violence at all. I must sound heartless, but it's not like I'm seeing it. I can imagine in a way that's less gorey than written. It depends on how squeamish you are, I mean, I can't even remember violence scenes that well, it may be inappropriate for people who can't handle violence. People who faint at the sight of blood stay away! Anyways, take it from a middle schooler, book violence won't kill you. It's less shocking to hear about these things than to see it, and I don't see what it's going to do to you if you read it. It won't mentally scar you. I'm pretty mature for my age, so I think that kids that can talk about it to someone will be fine.
I agree with Lina, my mom trusts me to come to her, if I ever read something that bothers me or makes me uncomfortable.

How do you feel about violence, gore, torture, and graphic scenes in Young-Adult books? Do you think it's inappropriate for younger teens and (sometimes even middle-graders) to be reading that kind of material?
