I am getting this thread set up now. With al these great stories, and being short ones, members may want to discuss them as soon as possible. I know I did :O) So have fun and let's chat about Screamscapes.

Everyone needs to check out the Special Offers thread for a great deal on a copy of Screamscapes for this months read.
I've read most of the stories in Screamscapes before. Looks like I'm going to have to pry this book out of sisters cold dead hands to get to the ones I haven't. LOL Just kidding. I was showing the book to her and haven't seen it since!
I've already read screamscapes, but am looking forward to reading it again. Are we going to read one story then discuss it then go on to the next?
Hi all,I'm having to do some travelling this week up to the Northeast, but I'll be checking in with the group read for a little bit each evening, probably between 10pm-midnight EST.
If you've got any questions, comments, suggestions, insults, heckles or bushel baskets of overripe fruit, feel free to pitch 'em my way. If it's something good, I take full credit. If it's a complaint, I'll probably blame it on my brother Adam Light. ; )
I hope everyone enjoys reading SCREAMSCAPES: Tales of Terror - don't forget to take advantage of the 99-cent eBook sale on Amazon this week if you don't have it already. I am also hoping to share something else exciting (and FREE) with the group read participants a little later on this forum.
Pleasant Screams!
-Evans
Wow Laura, sharing the book, and before you finished it too, you are a rare breed...funny :O) I actually bought that new Ryan Lockwood title Below, intending to read it right away, then my wife snatched it away after reading a few pages into it. I guess this was ok since I had Screamscapes next in line :o) I think the thing I really enjoyed about this title was, with each story, Evans put a little backgound on how the story came to him or if there were alternate endings and such. It was like having a special features section on a DVD :O) Oh and ArborEatum, has anyone here had a bottle of Angry Orchards ale yet? Look that up if not. The trees on that are ArborEatum creepy...would be cool to see this story in a live action film someday. And Pay Back, I just gotta read some comments about that one. If you laughed out loud while reading that story, does that mean your twisted?
Pay back was one of my favourite stories in the book. Maybe I am twisted because I do find thing like that funny. I didn't get my guess of how Joe was going to get back at Steven, but the way he did it was great. When he visited him in jail and gave him the finger while kissing his mum just cracked me up.
Alright, Evans. Just like you to blame me for everything. Well, in all fairness I probably am guilty.

Too funny you mentioned that, since I found an Angry Orchard coaster while i was writing ARBOREATUM and thought the same thing. It's still in my desk today, a little worse for the wear (one of my kids broke it in half and I had to tape it back together), and is much loved. This artwork did not inspire the story, though, as the idea originally came to me as a dream in 2008.

For the record, Angry Orchard Cider is good stuff! Haven't tried RED'S yet. I'll take your suggestion next time I see it.
Wow, very funny and cool that you found the coaster afterwards. It would be cool to find out who did the illustrations for the brewery and see what type of artwork they could come up with for your story. As much as I love the bottles artwork, I think I like the REDS apple ale better though. Personally I think your trees are a cross between these ones and either the Poltergeist and/or Evil Dead trees. Either way creepy and I will pass on living any where around them :O)
Angie, yeah I gotta say Evans really had me going with what the plan was Joe had. I was actually thinking the shmuck was gonna stick his arm out, punch the big dude on the ride in the face (cause Joe measured things and figured out it would work) and then the big dude would get off the ride and kick the boneheads butt ... but no Evans had to throw us all for a loop...great job and it's why I love this story Evans :o) Oh and I really liked the name Joe King (joking?) :O) Hats off pal :o)
Steven wrote: "Oh and I really liked the name Joe King (joking?) "Thanks, Steven. The names of the main characters, "Stephen Hill" and "Joe King", were a reversal of the last names of Stephen King and Joe Hill, and the eBook cover is a tongue-in-cheek homage/parody of the cover of their short story Throttle which came out around the same time
as you can see here
. The Joe King/"joking" connection was just icing on the cake!I actually took a lot of flak on Amazon in the form of negative reviews due to people thinking I was trying to trick people looking for THROTTLE into buying my story. I was even reprimanded by the president of the World Horror Association, which is something I've decided to own as a badge of honor.I honestly thought the parody was very apparent, but some disagreed vehemently, so I made the differences in the cover art a little more pronounced.
I guess some people's fingers automatically click "buy" the second they think Stephen King.
After you said the Scrambler was your favorite ride, I was just happy your last name wasn't Hill! ; )
I liked what you did with the names . I thought that Stephen was going to get shot while he was still on the ride. That's what I thought all the measurement was about. The ending was better though. The mole story was good as well. It was good the way the train was stopped and the people taken. The way the daughter, baby Kat, came into her element when the train went into the tunnel with no lights was great.
Angie wrote: "I liked what you did with the names . I thought that Stephen was going to get shot while he was still on the ride. That's what I thought all the measurement was about. PAY BACK is one of those stories that started out as one thing when I sat down to write it and ended up somewhere completely different than I ever expected.
As far as MOLE PEOPLE goes, I hope to revisit Baby Kat and the clan beneath the city again someday...the sequel and surrounding book is already outlined, but other projects have to be finished first. Wish I had more hours in the day (and arms to type with).
I'd definitely love to read a full size novel about the mole people. There's just so much more I'd like to now about them. I do love short stories and read lots and lots of them. The poor girl that was laughing on the train, that she never again did that was sad.Another I thought was good was curtains for love. I'm a bit scored of ghosties so this was a scary one. Helen and George New exactly what would happen when they sold the house to james. But a question, did they really make the curtain with Sophie s hair and nails and stuff? Is that how her ghost hung around. The boys on supernatural would say so :)
What I like most about Evans' writing is his control of the language no matter what genre he is dabbling in at the moment.
So much awesome chit chat goin on :0) Yeah, the Curtains story was really cool and it's interesting to read about the thoughts the readers took away from it. I loved both endings but the one chosen was the creepiest one and I could totally see it being made into a Tales From the Crypt episode.
I've just downloaded Evans free book cry baby, so big thanks to Evans for that. I loved all of screamscapes so I'm looking forward to reading that tomorrow.

I loved cry baby, the way the mum was probably faking sleep so she didn't have to get up gave me a bit of a laugh :) That reminded me of when my kids were small. But the way the little boy was acting was a bit creepy. I didn't guess the ending, the poor dad, night after night of broken sleep he woke up to a big knife to his neck
Angie wrote: "I loved cry baby, the way the mum was probably faking sleep so she didn't have to get up gave me a bit of a laugh :) That reminded me of when my kids were small. Hey everybody with knives to their necks, are ya free flowing yet? :o) a little sick Halloween time humor goes a long way huh...to the blood bank? Maybe? Don't know..anyway, how's everyone enjoying that Screamscapes book? I do really like the covers for this title and it's interesting to see the changes. Oh Angie, did you say yes to Little Brothers? I have this all new AOL email stuff and I am having a hard time getting used to it and finding emails I thought I saved...I thought high speed would be great and it is but sometimes it's too fast for an old fart like me. So, what's the status on the film option for Screamscapes Evans? Is it a go yet? Maybe an animated TV series? Where we going with this? :O)
I said yes to the loan Steve, big thanks :), do you need my email again? A screamscapes tv show would be pretty cool, would it be one story or the whole book? I don't know which I would like to see the most, or at least first.
Yeah, you should send the address again. I'm still trying to figure out where the last message got put :o) oops
A Screamscapes film or animated series? I'm ready for offers! Even though I wish I could say I just got out of a casting session for Arboreatum and announce that Christopher Lee has signed on to play Lemuel, in fact I've been wrangling the final details on the pocket paperback edition and reviewing the final studio recordings for the WHATEVER POSSESSED YOU audiobook (which sounds wicked good so far, even has a little music to set the mood).
I'm in the process of putting all the final bows on Screamscapes, and unless that movie or television deal comes through I'll be going into hibernation for a while to finish work on my debut novel, which I can't wait to share with everyone.
I just finished and reviewed Screamscapes. Excellent work! Five Stars, of course, and the longest review I've ever written. For anyone interested:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Awesome review, Jason. And funny to boot!
I try to make my reviews interesting. I think that is the best way to tell how much I liked a book: how much fun I put into reviewing it. Still shocked I liked Mole People - no not liked, loved. Would definitely love to see a full length work with that premise.
Thanks so much for the amazing review, Jason. I liked it so much I might have to print it out and mount it on the wall...or against the wall, depending on who's watching. :-)
Evans wrote: "Thanks so much for the amazing review, Jason. I liked it so much I might have to print it out and mount it on the wall...or against the wall, depending on who's watching. :-)"Umm, uh, I didn't say that! Must have been Adam. yeah, that's it.
Adam, I think ArborEATum remains my favorite too, but lots of potential there with Mole People.
Couldn't post the review to Amazon. Apparently, i swore. Censor police didn't like that. Will try to clean it up tomorrow.
