Despite my confusing things by accidentally creating a second poll, we have two clear winners for our group reads in November and December. I'm very happy with the choices, one gay book and one lesbian book both of huge reputations (I'd say LGBT classics). Better yet, I've only read one of the two; so I'll be able to discover something new too!

Hi all, the moderators have discussed it, and we've decided that we're going to allow group reads from earlier in the group to be repeated! So feel free to nominate any book we've never read as a group or any book we've read as a group more than 5 years ago.

We had a tie for second place; so we'll be reading three books as a group in May and June. They all sound good to me!

Tipping the Velvet

the highly acclaimed novel by Sarah Waters set in Victorian times with lesbian themes, chosen by both the New York Times and The Library Journal as one of the best books of 1998.

The Center of the World

the German novel by Andreas Steinhöfel with gay themes much praised in the German press and abroad. In the nationwide German newspaper Die Zeit, Konrad Heidkamp praised Steinhöfel for excelling himself: "The flashbacks from the children's point of view that allow room for Steinhöfel's deadpan humor, and the romantic fairytales - from the pond via the black wooden doll to the castle with royal children -, combined with the young literate author's smart way of introducing these two layers into the storyline, make this a book on the tenderness of reading and the risk inherent to strong feelings."

Patience & Sarah

the novel by Isabel Miller that won the very first Stonewall Book Award in 1971. This novel is also coincidentally one of the novels Sarah Waters has cited as a primary influence for her own work.

Need to get the what are you reading for Oct. I cannot believe it's Oct again. Before I know it I'll be another year older which is kind of scary at my age.

Sorry all - I completely dropped the ball on the group reads. Been in a bit of a funk since the election, and lots going on, job search, yadda yadda.

Several of the branches in my county library association either have They Both Die at the End or have it on order. I'll put a hold on it and hope to get it during the time period.

I plan to track down Meanwhile, Elsewhere (which I wanted to read anyway) and I'll look for They Both Die at the End as well

I'm about a third of the way into [book:They Both Die at the End. It's what I call YA+ meaning it's appropriate for YA but also has adult themes which may be recognized by those who have lived some decades. I suspect the novel affects me differently at 72 than someone at 18 years.

I agree, it is more YA+ almost NA but I guess it's YA because of the characters ages?

Nominations are now open for our group reads that will run through the end of February! Books that were read in the first years of the group are fine to nominate again as we have many new members since then, but nominations for books that the group has already read recently will not count.

Anyone can either nominate a book or second a book that has already been nominated but not both.

We will be accepting nominations and seconds until January 5. On that day, the eight books with the most number of seconds will go to the poll. Among books with the same number of seconds, choice of which book goes to the poll will be based on which nomination was received earliest.

Please be sure to post the title and author.

Important Rule: Authors may not nominate their own books.

Remember, the authors should be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, or feature significant gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender characters in their work. Queer can be interpreted as broadly as we like.

Any genre (SF/fantasy, horror, romance, mystery), non-fiction, and classics are acceptable. Based on this criteria, we should have plenty of books to choose from. If you are nominating a title that is part of a series, please make sure to nominate the first book, unless we have already read it as a group.

The book discussions will start as soon as poll voting is done and continue through the end of February. This should give everyone sufficient time to obtain and read the books.
