Marci, I read "The Candy Shop War" by Brandon Mull after my daughter Jennie said her friend with teen and pre-teen children thought it was a fun book. I thought it was fun too. But then I started reading the first volume in the Fablehaven series by Mull and got through about 2/3 of the book before I took it back to the library. It was just too little-kid-fantasy for me. Now, maybe pre-teens would enjoy it. I'm not sure if I will check it out again some other time and give the series a second chance or not. I know some kids really like it. I guess, at 60, I'm not as young as I thought I was! :)

I didn't see anything objectionable. It's a cute story but I'm not a fantasy fan & I left it at that. My 12 year old son read the series and seemed to really like it (and from what I read I thought it was harmless). Personally, I wouldn't consider it a book with strong moral value if that is what you are looking for but it's clean entertainment & I was fine with my son reading it. So Brandon Mull is LDS? That's interesting, I didn't know that.

Ya, I'm pretty happy with clean entertainment although I wish I could find stuff with stronger moral value.
My kids attended a young writer's conference where Brandon Mull spoke. After the conference they told me that he is LDS. Since reading your message, I asked wikianswers, "Is Brandon Mull LDS?" Their answer was, "Yes, Brandon served a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Chile."
