Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) Any good UF or PNR books with witches as the main protagonist?

message 2: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 367 comments Off the top of my head there is:

Rachael Morgan by Kim Harrison Dead Witch Walking

The Dark Forgotten by Sharon Ashwood Ravenous

Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley The Mists of Avalonthis is more toward fantasy rather than UF

Sunshine by Robin McKinley (stand alone)

A book that I loved as a teen but have not read as an adult was The Witching Hour by Anne Rice

Another series which I plan to read but have not yet started is the Daughters of the Blood by Anne Bishop
Daughter of the Blood

Hopefully others will have additional suggestions.

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) I love the Rachel Morgan series. It's where I really fell in live with the genre. I've never heard of the others though.

Eloise Kindred | 7 comments I'm writing a series with a witch as the main protagonist. I feel there is a gap in the market when it comes to this genre. A lot of the heroines in modern day fantasy are so passive. I wanted to write something where the girl can kick ass and fight demons, like they used to in Buffy & Charmed. I've uploaded the first book in the series on Wattpad. It's called "Brand New Moon" if anyone is interested. So far none of the agents I've contacted are!!

This is like the second time someone has told me about this book. So adding it to my list!

Rick (rook916) Kelly Armstrong has a series as well where a few of the books focus on a witch as a main protagonist, but the one I can think of off the top of my head is The Hollows series (Rachael Morgan) by Kim Harrison

Jalilah You can add Dime Store Magic and Industrial Magic by Kelly Armstrong to your list. They are part of a series, Kelley Armstrong, Women of the Otherworld Series, 4 Book Collection: Bitten, Stolen, Dime Store Magic, Industrial Magic which now I believe has 10 books, but each book is a stand alone.
An Excellent series by Mercedes Lackey is Diane Tregard. She only wrote 3 which is too bad! They are Burning Water Children of the Night Jinx High

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 138 comments In addition to the previous mention of books by Kelley Armstrong, Kim Harrison, and Mercedes Lackey, I recommend, in no particular order:
A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night, parts 1 and 2 of a trilogy by Deborah Harkness, part 3 still to come.
Blonde with a Wand and Chick with a Charm by Vicki Lewis Thompson
Witches of East End, Serpent's Kiss, and Winds of Salem by Melissa de la Cruz
The Trouble With Magic, first in a series by Madelyn Alt
A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses by Molly Harper
50 Ways to Hex Your Lover, first in a series by Linda Wisdom
Brownies and Broomsticks, first in a series by Bailey Cates
Witchling, first in a series by Yasmine Galenorn
Vicious Circle, first in a series by Linda Robertson
Black Magic Woman, first in a series by Justin Gustainis
The Patriot Witch, first in a trilogy by C.C. Finlay
It Takes a Witch, first in a series by Heather Blake

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) Thanks you guys. My tbr pile is getting huge =)

Sara | 51 comments I agree with the recommendations of Vicious Circle (Persephone Alcmedi, #1) by Linda Robertson , Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison , A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses (Half Moon Hollow, #2) by Molly Harper , and Dime Store Magic (Women of the Otherworld, #3) by Kelley Armstrong .

Depending on your definition of witch, I would also recommend Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews , Urban Shaman (Walker Papers, #1) by C.E. Murphy , and Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1) by Kalayna Price

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) I've been curious about the Kate Daniels series. Is it any good?

message 14: by Sara (new)

Sara | 51 comments It is awesome. Some find the first book to be slow but I love this series. A fantastic lead with an awesome supporting cast and all types of supernatural creatures. Lots of humor too.

Amazingly good!!
Like Sara said the first book is really slow by the second half I was into it though.

Brianna | 36 comments I second Kate Daniels. It's an amazing series

message 17: by Sue (new)

Sue | 28 comments I cannot say enough good things about the Kate Daniels series! They are all beyond amazing! Also really, really like Deborah Harkness and her Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night, both are very well written.

Ditto on that one!

message 19: by Susan (new)

Susan | 45 comments I love a lot of the suggestions people have already made I would add Bitter Night (Horngate Witches #1) by Diana Pharaoh Francis to the list.

message 20: by Ambisaurus (new)

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) I had forgotten about the Horngate Witches series. It's been on my tbr shelf for so long. Is it as good as it sounds?

message 21: by Brianna (new)

Brianna | 36 comments Looks like I need to move Discovery of Witches up my TBR. :)

It is, a very unusual world.

Julia | 615 comments I'm currently reading Omens by Kelley Armstrong. I'm a 100+ pages into this nearly 500 pages book, but I'm thinking the main character is going to wind up being witch.

Or something.

I agree with the earlier recs of the author's Dime Store Magic.

Check out The Lace Reader, it's about modern- day witches in Salem, MA.

Also look at The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane which starts out present day, then becomes historical...

If by witch, does your definition stretch to bruja? If yes, check out Forests of the Heart.
