I'm in on this one. I even purchased the novella since I think it was one of the DarkFuse member gifts before I joined.
This is kind of getting interesting. At the beginning I thought it would be a story about a husband who was mentally ill and halucinating about his wife. It's looking like there is a supernatural element though.
I just stopped at 49% (chapter 13 I think) and I have to say this is the best Curran I have read since Skin Medicine. This novella is exactly what I love in a horror story which is a really dark ominous mood being set, and a very creepy feeling story. I wonder if the midwife is visiting any other pregnant woman? That was my original theory since she appears to be the witch but now that I know about the farmhouse I'm thinking probably not.
This was a good story. Glad I decided to read it. The ending was much darker than I would have ever predicted!
Is this your first tim curran? I was a little disappointed in the ending, not that I don't like unhappy endings but they are better if the hero losses because of some kind of twist we didn't see coming. Sure he thought the witch was dead but that was only the page before she came back and cut him down, not like she was killed off in the beginning and then made a triumphant return our anything. Good five star novella though nonetheless.
I kind of figured it was, based on a couple comments about what you where and weren't expecting. If you liked this you have got to read Skin Medicine. Far me is really good as well, Tim is my favorite author and skin medicine is my all time favorite book. I also recommend Fear Me
