pitching your book for a movie?

Yeah. I think it has the potential to be a good movie. The book has received a number of good reviews, and I've heard from a lot of readers you said they could relate to my story. So a movie has become my dream for the book. But I've no experience in that area. I wonder if I really need to convert it into a screenplay first, or could I just try to pitch the book itself. I have a friend (another professional writer) who writes screenplays and sends them off to Hollywood producers, but he has had no luck in that department.
So I was just wondering if anyone out there might have any insightful tips in regard to this.
