I read The Road in only a few days it was so good. If I didn't have three baby boys I could of most certainly read it in one. I have been meaning to read this for years just always had tons of books on my list. The ending was amazing. The only thing I wish it would of told is why the world was apocalyptic.
Samantha, I think in the movie it alluded to or said, and I could be wrong, but I think it was after a nuclear war.
Samantha wrote: "I gotta watch the movie I hope it's good."It was great. They followed the book very very closely (equatable to No Country for Old Men) and made a fantastic movie out of it.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the film decided it was a nuclear war, and with all of the ash and stuff in the book I assume that's what it is.
when I read the book I got the impression it was more of a natural disaster. The story is great up until the end.
Started to book yesterday and through 100 pages this morning. I can't put it down. It's a depressing an heavy book but McCarthy's description makes me feel I am there with the boy and dad. Looking forward to finishing the book this weekend.
I assumed it was a nuclear war because the earth is barren. This was one of the most haunting books I've read.
The boy reminded me of my own son, the book made me an emotional mess, one of my favorite reads of all time.
Marc I agree! In my head pictured me and my son walking through the desolate world. I think that's why the book was so emotional and impactful.

I agree, was not really pleased with the ending.
If you guys are fans of audiobooks then this months selection is Audible's deal of the day today (10/7). You can pick it up for $2.99 if you're an audible member.
I finnished reading it yesterday and I'm not sure what I thought of it. so disapointed with the ending thou.
My nephew introduced me to this book and I found it a very good read. I have really become a fan of books that show a desolate, barren world where the world of today is gone and how people live in the changed environment. The Road did a good job of describing the effort just to survive.
I loved the book but the movie? I did enjoy it but I felt it was missing something. I just didn't have the same feeling for it like I did with the book.
I read this book back a few years ago and will always remember the haunting images in McCarthy's broken style. So much so, that I have added this book to my AP lit classes this year. We actually just finished analyzing this book over the past few weeks . . . so I find it kind of ironic it's the months group read.Several of you have noted how you hated the ending . . .WHY??? The ending is the only part of the novel that even hints at a sliver of hope for the world. I thought the ending was beautiful and had to happen exactly as it did.
Now if only their lit. analysis essays were as compelling as the read . . .

Hmmm I've been undecided about this book for about two years or more. I read it and didn't hate it, but I guess I wouldn't rave about it either. It was just okay for me. If I'm going to read post apocalyptic then I want something more like The Stand. Having said that, I did think it was really well written and very believable.
I think The Road is a rare and incredible piece of modern literature.McCarthy's writting style is so pared down, his words chosen so carefully, it's like reading the most incredible heart wrenching poetry.

The relationship between the father and son is so very real , much reminded me of my own son and I , that one of a kind love only felt by parents and their children ... This is the only book I can remember in my life that I was actually crying over the outcome when I finished ... But I still think it ended perfectly , the only ending possible ...
I think the ending was fitting. I finished reading this morning and felt extremely satisfied when I was done. His word flow and story telling reminded me of a poetic novel. Even though the book was depressing and sad to think about, his words and flow put an artistic and creative picture to a depressing world.
I have, for sure - Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West but my big favorite is No Country for Old Men-- The movie was excellent, especially Javier Bardeem, who played the villain -- But, seriously, if you've the time, (It's not very long) it's a fast read, but it is one terrific book!

Daniel wrote: "Has anyone read any other books by him?"I second No Country for Old Men. It's great. Haven't read any others yet.
I think part of what made this novel good for me is the language McCarthy used and his poetic narrative. If you break it down not too much went on for a book of this length yet I couldn't put it down. What does everyone else think?

Agreed. The prose makes up for any deficiencies in the story, although I thought the ending was the logical outcome for the characters. Someday maybe the group will read
(Blood Meridian) which I think is the greatest of Cormac McCarthy's works.

I read the review to Blood Meridian and it sounds like a very interesting book. I might need to put it on my list to read.
The prose was well written and although the ending was predictable, I think and ending I could think of would be predictable. Unless he ended on a bad note which I think would have irritated a lot of readers.
I finished this book recently. I think I am in the very small percentage of people who didn't think it was the best read ever or hate it to all hell lol ... I definitely thought it was a very unique and engaging story. The lack of punctuation, chapters, quotations marks and bland dialogue between father and son did not work for me.

There is nothing to distract us from the father-son relationship. It is a novel at its most basic.

I definitely tho..."Agree, Tash. At times I DID get confused with who was saying what and had to back track to figure it out. This is a writer who knows the "rules" of writing and chose a different way to tell it (although, if I did that in my writing class, my prof would rip me a new one LOL)... but yes, I get that there was a reason he wrote it and told it the way he did. And I did enjoy it.
I kinda hated part when they were traveling toward the beach and beach part.I read it on beggining of 2013 and now I'm trying to remeber parts of book. It's very long and I like it but I didn't enjoy it as I did with Children of Men.Also so long but really diffrent way of writting. Some parts were very creepy and unsettling but I was prepared because I saw movie before reading the book. It's atmosphere mostly that I loved in movie and book.I can imagine myself in that fucked up world and always think what the fuck these people are still trying so hard to survive when everything is not just shitty but everything worse you can ever imagine. Kinda love reading these post apocalypse books and wonder how much they need to break down and they just give up on life or be killed. If you are in any distopian world are still trying to survive you are fucking INSANE!I was really depressed when I finished the book!!!!
