You have pointed out a much neglected fact Vandana. There are many good books in Malayalam which deserves to be read by more people. But sadly not that many books are being translated to other languages. To understand the disparity take a look at any book fair. There are many Tamil,Bengali books which are available in malayalam. From what I can see many Tamil writers have generated a following here.I think some initiative should be taken to ensure that our literature breaks the barriers of language..
I agree with Simon, even i could not digest how khasakk can be traslated. The atmost feature of the novel is the kind of literature used in it which a person of different language could not digest..Our novel are such. But there are works which could be translated ,which holds a strong story and implies stongly on narrations...The beauty of the language will be lost when it is translated or rather it should be crafted with such a perfection. I was terribly dissappointed when i read the translation of Wuthering Heights in Malayalam but at the same time dat of 100 years of Solitude was much better..Hope translators to take some effort in extracting the real soul of our works.
Recently I did translations of 15 D.H.Lawrence stories...published by Olive Books, Kozhikode...released by Sri Akber KakattilReaders may please read and post opinions...
