Viscountess Viridian (viscountessviridian) | 179 comments Link to Official Mod Thread for Challenge

My simplified rules:

The challenge will run from October 4th to October 19th.

There are two parts to this challenge. The team can choose to participate in none, one or both parts. All books read will count for both parts, there is no need to read separate books for each part. Each part is awarded its own BAPs, so there is a chance to earn a lot of BAPs in October. The top 5 teams in each event will earn extra BAPs, but participating teams will earn at least 5 BAPs for each event.

Event 1: Reading Like a Banshee (link to mod post)

This is a basic read-a-thon. For this event, the goal is to read as many pages as you can. No need to plan what books you read, anything goes.

♥1. Choose a goal of pages to read(this is just for you and us to know, there will not be any advantage or disadvantage if you can reach it or not)

♥2. Books do not need to be finished to count. You can read part of a book and still count the pages. Only pages read during the time frame will count.

For example, if you are on page 23/200 of a book on Oct 4 and then finish it on Oct 10, you can count the last 177 pages. Or, if you start a book and only get to page 100/200 by Oct 19, you can count that first 100 pgs. If you start a book and just can't finish it, you can still count the pages of it you have read.

♥3. You will need to post every day or so I can report how many pages have been read.

♥4. At the end of the two weeks, we will add up all the pages read by the participating members. We will also add up all the book goals of the participating members and then use those two numbers to determine the winning team's ratio. The five teams with the highest ratios will earn extra BAPs according to their placement. Each participating team will earn 5 BAPs.

For example, if Sheila, Kim, Erin and Jackie participate, their goals are 300, 250, 100 and 150 which adds up to 800. If collectively they read 10000 pages, then the team ratio would be 10000/800 which is 12.5.

Event 2: Halloween Book Hunt (link to mod post)

This event takes a bit more planning since books will need to fit into themes. Each task must be posted in order 1-5, although books can be read for any task at any time during the 2 weeks. For example, if the 3 books for Task 3 are finished first, I will wait to post it until Task 1 and 2 are finished.

♥1. The team will need to pick 5 of the 10 themes to complete five tasks. (see link for list)

♥2. Then each theme will need to be assigned to a task and a different number of books will need to be read to complete each task. There are two themes that are spell-out:) (15 books total)

-Task 1: 1 book
-Task 2: 2 books
-Task 3: 3 books
-Task 4: 4 books
-Task 5: 5 books

♥3. BAPs are awarded after each task. A clue to the the final task(6) will be given after each completed task, and the final task(6) will be worth 5 BAPs but will not require any reading.

Either one will work. I will be checking both. I also need to know how many pages of it you read today. The book being completed qualifies for Event 2, but only the pages you actually read today will count toward Event 1.

Viscountess Viridian (viscountessviridian) | 179 comments Great Kim, I am at work now, so I will update you later. Just tell me what you want to increase your goal to. You can think of the flu as a positive thing because the more pages you read the higher the team's ratio will end up. And the higher the ratio, the more BAPs the team will potentially earn.

Yes, I can also put those books into the second part of the challenge.

Naura (nauratheexplora) Kim, hope you start feeling better soon; but in the meantime- get reading! LOL.

VV; I am assuming if you surpass your goal that extra pages will still count, correct?

Yes, the goal is just to motivate yourself, it doesn't factor into anything. The main goal of the challenge is to read as many pages as you can.

The total pages read by the team will be added up and then divided by the book goals of the participating members. Right now there are 8 members participating so your pages read total will be divided by 1017(total of the book goals) at the end of the two weeks.

This is the number you want to be as high as possible since the 5 highest teams will earn extra BAPs. Just for participating in the challenge you earn 5 BAPs.

Now you have 2 editions added, I put the wrong link in my last post.

You can delete the one that has no date read added to it and just edit the one with a date read to tag it with your shelf. Does that make sense?

message 36: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) How about now?

Viscountess Viridian (viscountessviridian) | 179 comments You have two editions of the book marked as read because I gave you the wrong link to your edition the first time.

If you don't care about that, you can leave it since only the new one is tagged with your team shelf and shows up on your tracker.

If you want to have only the edition you actually read marked as read, the edition with a date added of 10/6/13(hardcover) needs to be deleted from your read shelf and then the edition with a date added of 5/4/12(kindle) needs to be tagged with your team shelf.

Rebekah (bekahpaige) | 34 comments Am I correct that we have finished all of the books lined up for the 5 tasks? So our goal now is to just read as much as possible? I only ask because if there is still more to complete, I will decide what to pick next based on what we need?

message 43: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) I was just looking at the spreadsheet linked in post 2 Rebekah because I wondered the same thing. I don't think the books have all been completed but it did look like all the slots were filled up. So I'm thinking it is now read whatever you want and wait until everyone finishes their books that are in the slots so we can find out what the final task is going to be.

The team has been really quick at getting their books read.

Sheila is right. All the slots were filled in Event 2 and the last 2 books needed for it were finished today with your World War Z book and Jackie's Dragons of the Dwarven Depths book. I will go post the finished tasks and then the team just has to wait for the clues to be revealed for the final task.

Yes, you may count the pages read for your seminar even if you don't read the whole book, since the book is eligible to be counted if completed.

Viscountess Viridian (viscountessviridian) | 179 comments It looks like this is the first team to finish the first 5 tasks for Event 2. The clues are going to be posted on the schedule originally meant for posting tasks. Here is:

Clue #1:It's all or nothing

I'm expecting Clue #2 to be posted tomorrow.

Just because the first 5 tasks for Event 2 are finished doesn't mean you should stop reading. Read as many pages as you can so that you can possibly win Event 1 as the team with the highest ratio. Great job, Forest Green!
