The Patrick Hamilton Appreciation Society discussion

Hi, interesting group.... I liked the thread on other london books. Will have to go through my read list but a couple that spring to mind are Englands Lane by Joseph Connolly and the nightwatch by sarah waters. Others, i have seen already mentioned. Apart from London... The biography. Will look through this group with interest.

I think a separate thread for modern writers who write about London, or who evoke shades of Patrick Hamilton, is a great idea.

I've not read The Night Watch by Sarah Waters, though have seen plenty of people reading it on public transport. What did you like about it?

And England's Lane by Joseph Connolly is completely new to me. I've just read your five star review. It sounds like an interesting read. I notice that the pub you had recently visited crops up in this book. I always enjoy reading about places that I know.

I'm currently reading a book about Fitzrovia, my first job, in the late 1970s, as a 16 year old messenger, was at a film company in the basement of Boston House in Fitzroy Square so I got to know the area pretty well. I am also, coincidentally, putting together a walking tour of the area that will take place later this month. Anyway, as part of my, ahem, "research" I'm reading a book called Noho which features pretty much every pub in the area. For what it's worth, Noho is a cliche-ridden private detective yarn, set in the 1930s, that I would categorise as enjoyable tosh. The author, James Davis, has written a companion book "A Trail Through The Pubs, Bars And Taverns Of Historic Fitzrovia: Noho Walking Tours". I'll report back.
