I think that Ruth's aunts shun her family because they have disrespect for the father. And they felt like they didn't need to be part of it.

Amira Cuffy | 7 comments Abbyfutterman wrote: "How has moving to Delaware impacted James?" James moving to Delaware makes him smarter about him self. A new start is what he needed. He didn't know anybody there so instead of instead of doing drugs he became interested in music. So moving to Delaware was the best thing James could have done.

Maybe it is because of reminds him of his past. This can motivate him to not be as religious as his parents were. Additionally, it seems as though he wants to prove to his mother that he is different from his other siblings

I think that James isn't as religious as his mother because he thinks he has to many problems to deal with. I also think that he doesn't believe in god and that's why he's not as religious

The aunts shun Ruth for many reasons but the most influential is because she married an African American man. For example stated on page 217 "Your out of the family. Stay out. We sat Shiva for you." In other words with Ruth being interested in African Americans It caused her family to shun her.

I think that it made him very sad. Also he didn't want to show his mom because she is to sensitive and she probably doesn't want to know bout is past

Juliana | 4 comments Amira wrote: "Why is James so interested in his past?"

Because he had never heard it from his mother and he feels as though he deserves to know it. His past has an influence on his life so it is important for him to know his relatives to learn more about himself.
